I went to my favorite abandoned lot today but there wasn't much moving :(

Xti + MPE-65 + MT-24EX. Really Right Stuff flash bracket with one flash head pointed at the critter and the other on an extender to provide fill light. In some of the images you'll notice that the belly of the fly is lit -the fill flash bounced off of the flower.

Lovely shots John, especially #2. It's amazing how good hoverflies look when you get them lit correctly and stop losing highlight details. My only criticism is the slight yellow cast, which I take it is from the fill light from the flowers themselves.

Thanks Dave!

Part of that cast is from the flower, and part of it is from my diffuser. I can take it out with a levels adjustment, but I like the "warmth".

Yeah, I know what you mean. I got some shots of what look like some type of paper wasp today, and I preferred the warmer variant shot. True, it wasn't 100% accurate, but it looked better to my eyes. Have yet to post the image ;)

I'm getting images now that look like they were taken with natural light early in the morning or late in the evening, instead of looking like flash photos...
