Don't do it, the cam lens combo weighs about 4 pounds and the tripod is only capable of holding 3.5 pounds....

crap - ok. thanks. i just figured a normal tripod might be too heavy to carry around. :-(
i thought about a gorillapod... but kinda too expensive and not sure if it'll support the camera neither...and it doesn't come with a head.

i guess i'm stuck with a normal tripod then?

Have you got a Slik Sprint Pro mini? I have and I wouldn't put more than a 350d and 10-22 on, and that's if I hold my camera's neck strap at all times in case it topples.

Personally I wouldn't take to nor use any kind of tripod at Disney or most any other place that attracts hords of people like it does. Other than self portraits and perhaps nightime shots at slow shutter speeds, I doubt that you'll have much if any need for a tripod and carring one around, finding a place to set one up then actually using it would detract from the fun of being there IMO.

I've got a Slik 613 CF that's good for the 20D/70-200 f/2.8 IS. You might give that a look-see. 1.5 lb without head and under 22" folded.

I travel with a tripod frequently and am always glad I have it, over not. What I find challenging is once I get there, is scoping and limiting its use to make it really productive and not extra baggage for the sake of lugging it. You should be easily be able figure out the right times to use it to maximize the benefit.

No to be rude, but my real question is why would you be willing to invest so much on a body and lens, but not a solid foundation? It's like buying a Ferrari and deliberately putting cheap tires on it for a road trip.

Unlike most bodies, a good tripod and head will last for many, many years and generally hold it's value....a $60 Slik is, well a $60 slik.

Jon - thanks for the tip. i'll check it out

Screamer - i only thought about getting a slik because it's a travel tripod. because we're gonna be at parks most of the time, i figured i dont wanna take a proper tripod with me coz it'll be too heavy (especially on the plane as we have lots to take with us already)

but i might just listen to everyone and not take one. if i still think i need one when i'm over there, i'll go and buy one there. it'll still much cheaper than over here in the UK.

and i wont use it during daytime - it's for night time use when i get to go out on my own and be creative and check the area out :-)

thanks

Since your Gf was so kind enough to buy a camera for you, I would suggest something along the lines of a Gitzo. :) Gitzo is expensive yes, but it hasn't let me down one bit. A good solid head is also a must. Really Right stuff is the way to go. For that camera and set up you have now the RRS BH-40 will do ya just fine. These things are essential when you want a good solid foundation to hold your new baby. We don't want to hear a story that your MK III dropped bcoz the leg on the tripod collapsed, right? :)
In all seriousness, a good tripod + a good ball head = a lifetime of no headaches. Once you invest in these two items, they should last you a long time. :)

I'm with Screamer on this one. Support seems to be one of those things that people always scrimp on. If I was going to go to Disneyland and I had a Mark III, I'd spend the money on a Gitzo 1540T or 1550T.

As for Really Right Stuff, I'm not buying anything from them anymore. I've had totally sh*tty service from them and have heard from others that their service is just not that good (anymore).

Ok. :) Than I would suggest other companies like Markins, Kirk, and Arca. :)

Good suggestions.

I've moved to Acratech (v2) and would add them to the list...not cheap either, but worth every penny.
