I currently own a 20d and was thinking of upgrading to the 40d.I shoot alot of motorsports at the moment so would i benefit from the faster frames per sec. Any comments would be helpful.

Cheers.

There are loads of threads which should help with your decision.

I upgraded from the D60 to the 40D and I am really surprised at how many things have changed over the years.
The truth is that I am struggling to understand the 40D,especially the focus points, as the D60 was so easy to operate :-(

To answer your question, Im sure the 40D will be a great camera for motor sports. I used to be a full time photographer at Brands Hatch circuit for about 14 years but not done too much photography from when I left there until last year.

Hi MaDProFF,
I'm sure the 40D is a great camera, especially after jumping straight from the D60.

But I am certainly not getting any where near the best out of it as I am struggling to understand it's complexities(spelling), for me.

I have had a few questions answered, (thanks), but I am really struggling to understand the focus points. On the D60 there were just 3 across the middle and at the moment I get better results from that than the 40D

Hi,

I also think the 40D will be a great motorsports camera. I'll be upgrading to a pair of them within 6 months or so. I'm not much of a "spray and pray" shooter, though, so the 6.5 fps is not a major reason I'll be getting it. (I've got 5 fps now with my 30D and 6 fps with film cameras, and hardly ever use those modes with either.)

Ben, you can select any single focus point to be active on the 40D. Many people limit it to just the center point. If using the 40D without at BG-E2 or BG-E2N, you can use AF-On to activate AF, get the image in focus, then recompose as you see fit before firing the shutter. With the grip, you may want to use the Custom Function (probably Cfn 4, but I don't have a 40D) to change AF to use the * button, since it's on both the grip and the back of the camera. The single point focus method is a good way to get started and works well with One Shot autofocus.

But, at times you also will probably want to try AI-Servo, possibly with all the focus points active, to let the camera track moving subjects as you pan and follow them. In this case, you might want to leave AF linked to the shutter button, so one button is doing everything (AF, exposure metering and shutter release). This is the fastest way of shooting with it.

Keep at it, read the manual and take lots of photos. Perhaps pick up a copy of the Magic Lantern Guide for 40D, once it is available. I find the third party books to be helpful, picking up where the manual leaves off.

Ben,

I just joined and glad to see at least one person has upgraded from D60 to 40D. I also own a D60 I was one of the first one and paid a pretty price for it. However, I'd like to hear your perspective moving from D60 since I am in the process of getting a 40 D
