A friend of mine told me that EF 70-200 F/4.0 (the one that I'm interested in) will discontinued, is it?

this is one of canon's bread and butter lenses, they would not discontinue the lens unless they had a better or updated version of it in the works.

You can get a new one at buy.dig and BHphoto for about 550-575. Not too certain if it is being discontinued, but the price may be lower if there are rebates issued soon (I hope) or once BF rolls around (if you can wait). Discontinued or not, I hear it is a great lens. Looking to get one myself.

The 70-200 f/4L has NOT stopped in production. The f/4 IS didn't come instead of the f/4, it's just an addition to the 70-200 'fleet'.

If there's a UU f/4 IS, and a UV f/4, I guess the f/4 hasn't stopped.

What's the difference between UU and UV?

The differnce is that UU is a 2006-built lens and a UV is a 2007 built lens. A UV 70-200 f/4L and a UU 70-200 f/4L IS, as I said, seems to show that the 70-200 non-IS is not going to disappear from the "brand new" market any soon. Not that there are many old in stock, just that they're still being manufactured.

Very funny!

The Line up is 4L / 4L IS / 2.8 / 2.8 IS!

No reason to stop with the 4L (it's for lower budget's)! So there is
a market for this lens!! (More market than the 4L IS)!

Canon guaranteed the survival of the 70-200/4 when they priced the 4.0 IS so ridiculously high.

I never understand when people complain about 70-200 f/4 IS's price.

The f/4 IS has got more damped zoom and focus rings, very good IS, good weather sealing, and not to forget, MUCH BETTER OPTICS. The optics are much different than in the non-IS. The lens is so sharp that I'm really thinking of selling my non-IS. But, well, the 100-400 is my main lens so I doubt I'd do it... at leas...

PS: Has an IS lens ever been updated (I'm not talking about 75-300 IS to 70-300 IS)? Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II IS USM is really a long name for a lens. :p

IS lenses wont be called updated... but wil be replaced like the 70-300 IS replaced the 75-300 IS. This means that not only the IS part is updated but that other neat mods will be made on the new lens!;)

The complaints are very valid. It may have been redesigned but its still fundamentally the same lens but with IS added. Even in comparison with other lenses within Canons own range, the price penalty for the IS lens is bloody huge. Completely unjustifiable.

Well, I think $1.050 for a lens built lake that and with quality and IS like that is a fair price.

80-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM = nice
200-400mm f/4L IS USM = out of my budget

:)

But I guess a 80-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS would be very big, with a 86mm filter mount. 77mm with 100mm as the widest would possibly mean a bigger filter mount for the 80mm...

If the 200-400 f/4L IS would be announced, and be very good and not extremely expensive, I'd sell my 100-400L IS and the 70-200L later and buy the 200-400/4L IS and 70-200/4L IS. Would be great! Would mind a 17-35mm f/4L (a bit smaller and sharper than the 17-40 f/4L) and a 28-70mm f/4L IS - so I'd have a 4 lens f/4L kit with super IQ. A 15mm f/2.8 fishey with a new body wouldn't be too bad either.

:D
