But I guess a 80-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS would be very big, with a 86mm filter mount. 77mm with 100

Nope, Nikon 80-400mm (external link) lens has 77mm filter and I believe Canon can do it 77mm aswell.

I think a bigma-like lens something like 120-500mm f4-5.6 at under $1300 would be the dream lens for bird shooters.

Nikon's 80-400mm lens is not a Canon 80-400mm L lens. ;)

If a Canon 100-400 has a 77mm filter mount and a Nikkor 80-400mm has a 77mm mount, it really does say something that Canon's could have a 82 or 86mm mount. :)

You can't - these were speculations what Canon will come with next in the 100-400 range, and my guess was 80-400 as 70-400 is a lot of zoom (and the lens would be HUGE, which the 100-400 is not ment to be or is) and a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II IS USM would be highly unlikely IMO. I however wouldn't mind a 100-400L II IS that would be as sharp as the 70-200 L IS f/4 - would buy it in a heartbeat. 3rd gen. IS and weather sealing would be super too.

:)

We'll hope...
