Sounds like you have a defective XTi (mirror assembly). Send it back to where you bought it from and have it exchanged.

I had the same picture issue not long ago, and turned out to be an incompatible CF card (8gb promaster's dont work on the XTi!). but that wouldnt explain the viewfinder... more then not, its what these guys said: Bad unit.

Can't answer that question because I've never used that card but the problem you describe with carema has nothing to do with your card.

Well, at least you won't have to wait a week for UPS to schlep the camera back and forth...

It's a long shot, but this will happen if you are exposing with flash, but have a shutter speed faster than about 1/200 s (not sure of the exact number for your camera. Could that be part of the answer?

there are 2 ways to look at this:
The picture is 3/4 bad or
the picture is 1/4 good
just kidding, sorry couldn't help it - just return the camera and don't accept repair - it should be replaced

You will be annoyed until you get a properly working camera in your hands. Then you will excited all over again:)

It might be a long shot but it's worth checking. A photo which is 3/4 black is a classic symptom of using a flash with a shutter speed that's too fast.

I think when rotating the shutter dial with the flash engaged, it STOPS at the max synch. speed.

That may depend on the mode in use. I think if it is set to manual, and maybe even Tv mode, it is possible to get this effect. I know I've seen it on my 30D - I can't recall if it was with the onboard flash or a hot-shoe mounted non-ETTL flash that I would have had to use in M mode.
