Has anyone tried replacing a camera's shutter? How easy/diffcult is it? My friend's rebel xt's shutter died, canon quoted $300 for service. He found someone selling a broken xt cheap (shutter works with less than 1k count, but the case is cracked and lcd broken). I am wondering how diffcult it will be to migrate the shutter from one xt to another. Has anyone done it before? Any instruction/advice is appreciated.

Sounds like an adventure. Here are a few sites to help you along the way. Let us know how it comes out. Post pics. :)

Wouldn't you be better off using the case and LCD off your friend's camera on the one with the good shutter?

Now that I think of it some more, if the camera with the good shutter will take pics, you could test it before committing to it...

You can buy a new shutter from Canon for $33.17 + $6.00 shipping. The part # is CG2-1603-000, but you won't need it. Just ask of a Rebel XT shutter assembly. Canon Parts phone number is: (732) 521-7230.

Oops, I just noticed you are in Canada. I don't know if you can buy parts from Canon USA, but perhaps they can direct you to the proper phone number. Good luck...

I'd give it a shot for $40 bucks--but I'm the guy they send stuff to for repair.

With similar items if you have the proper tools and pay close attention to details most things are just not that tough. Mass manufacturing techniques make assembly quite easy in most cases.

Good Luck

Hmmm, as a long-time electronics technician, I'd be concerned with calibrating the exposure post replacement (or at least a check to make sure nothing is out of calibration). I'm sure Canon has some method (software/hardware interface) to check that.
