I don't believe that any crop format DSLR on the market today has better low light capability than the 40D. And as already mentioned the 20D and 30D are close enough to be considered identical to the 40D as far as noise goes.

What!, Please tell me you heard of Nikon haha:lol:;)

ISO 1600. But of course I cheated. ;) One pass through NR and resizing for the web kills all signs of noise.

Right!

Wrong. The 40D uses a different sensor, and even a completely different image processor (Digic III in the 40D vs Digic II in the 20D and 30D)

I suppose opinions will vary and the debate will live on, but I have both the 20D and 40D. I was skeptical at first, but the 40D does do much better than the 20D. At higher ISO's the extra detail does show through and the images are easier to clean up.

I can't explain it any better. I'm out of town now and will have plenty of images to show after I return. Before I left though I ran a series of simple tests and again, if you're considering the 40D, there are a number of upgrades that make it worth it. Higher ISO performance is one of them.

So... if this is the same as the 30D thats means it must be the same as the 20D correct? Since the 30d sensor is the 20d's sensor......

Is this right?

Gee I'm considering the 40D until the 5DII comes out...... I just don't want to buy a 5D with a newer one right around the corner.

Thanks for posting these. I am evaluating what to buy next, and this is helping my decision. BobAtkins had posted 1600 and 3200 ISO comparison shots of the 40D and 30D, and they looked near identical. These look a bit better than my 20D can do at 3200...about the same at 1600... so I'm impressed.

One question for you... in your second picture, you have a 100% crop number 1, and a 100% crop number too. The girls head is not the same size in these two images, so how can they both be a 100% crop? Which one is really 100% (meaning its cropped so its showing the captured pixels... not reduced)?

Here is my contribution of a night shot taken at ISO3200. Taken with my 40D and 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

Note: Only PP was to correct WB and add a bit of Clarity, not much though.

I read somewhere that the 40D hunts less in low light (even with f2.8) than the 20D. Does everyone agree on that? I'm wondering b/c I'm shooting a lot of indoors and consider an upgrade.

Just added to original post, sorry missed that at first. Don't know where my head is at today.
