say in a party of people who generally use P&S, you are holding a big DSLR with a huge a** lens (say 24-70L). and then people come up to you complementing your camera, how do you reply?

I try to stay as low key as possible and not attract attention to myself or my gear. It does happen. I just usually reply that they are tools of the trade or lots of times it is just a plain thank you and I keep on trucking.. I will always take time to speak to those that wish to talk about photography. I always view every person out there as a potential customer and there is no reason to be short or rude with them. To each their own though, some people like to attract alot of attention as they like the "woohoo lookit me with the big camera" kind of thing and others just like to shoot without being bothered.

Really now the 24-70 as a big a** lens....I don't think so.:D:D

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I just say "it works well for me."

If they want to know more about it, I'm willing to elaborate, but they might be sorry for having gotten me started.

Me too, in the unlikely event that someone were to complement my gear. (I don't think I have any "bad*ss" lenses, whatever they are, but the 10-22 does seem to attract more than its fair share of comments.)

I smile, say "Thanks" and move on. If they ask anymore, Ill stop and go in depth unless Im shooting something important or if Im feeling anti-social at the moment.

I just tell them I bought a big camera because I prefer to be on this side of the camera than in front of it!

I tell 'em to bug off, I'm busy. Then I take my 50 1.8 and throw it at their face.

Really though, I take time to talk to anyone that shows interest in my set up and I would hope that others would treat me the same way.

It depends on who it is. When I'm shooting surfers at the pier and I have my 100-400, I usually get the most comments. Sometimes I'll just say, "Thanks, it's a great lens" or "yeah, it's my favorite toy...". My favorite response was one I stole from someone on this forum. When they comment on how big it is, I just smile and say, "Yeah, well, size matters." : )
