Baby portrait

Portrait of my 4 month old nephew. Done in a very provisory manner, but I'm interested in hearing what someone other than his parents and grandparents think about it.

The background is a blanket held by the dad and the light source was a regular window, meaning I had to over-expose it digitally to get this kind of look. Shot with 50mm 1.8 II at f/1.8 and ISO 400.

Yup, that's a baby allright . . .

Nice but I think babies are better in color. Looks strange to me that the baby is china white.

I guess I will have to go against the masses here by saying that I think this particular setting along with the low key lighting give this photo an almost Angelic appearance. Kind of like an Angel peering down from the clouds, if you will.

Great shot, but it's a bit too much white in my opinion. I like the innocence with white, but I couldn't help wondering if he's albino!

I like it. I think the over-emphasis on white makes it interesting.

They liked it a lot, but also thought it was too bright (at least that's what my dad said and they seemed to agree) and wanted it in colour.

I'd say color would be better IMO.

To me, the baby gets lost amongst all of the white.

I think it's great. Phillistines all who think it should be in color! (kidding)

No really, it's beautiful. The eyes are the subject. If you want to be shooting a standard photo, in color, all the time, get a job at Glamor Shots at the mall. If, not keep doing what you're doing. Break the rules! and if people don't like it, fine. In my oppinion it's worth being put in a coffee table book.

You have an excelent eye and good skills. Don't let a little criticism make you conform to the pack's wishes and to do what they do. Do you think Ansel Adams or Robert Mapplethorpe changed because of what the critics said? It's your eye, it's your art.

Look at it again and ask yourself: Do you like it? Is it what you were trying to do?

Wow, I think this is a great shot. If I were the parents, I would be thrilled with this shot. Admittedly, I would also want a more "normal" shot, but I'd love to matte, frame, and hang a shot like that of my child. Good work.

I really like this too, and like the way you over exposed it to get that particular effect. But I think its just a little too bright, by just a bit. If you play around with it in photoshop a little to decrease the brightness by a small amout, you will still have the effect you were after, but I think you will win over everyone who was saying it was too bright.

Can I suggest something? Your nephew has very very nice eyes, get a close up of his face where he is looking right into the camera. He's one of the lucky ones that has eyes that grabs the observer.
