This is a good place to start:

It has the basics, it is very easy to grasp with lots of visuals, and it is written by Canon pros so they use the Canon terminology for stuff that might have different names for different brands (like metering systems) If you go through this tutorial, and then apply the stuff when you get your equipment, you'll be taking your best pictures ever in no time.

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)

I think so! depending on where you get it you can get some great prices! I'm a newbie as well and have only had my 400D and kit lens for 5 days and have thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to learn more.

Ive also started to realize what I cant get out of the 18-55 and have lens envy!

The next Rebel probably won't be much ahead of the 400 unless it awaits a few more years. I would stick with it and enjoy it. Lenses and a good flash are your main concern now.

Just thought I would mention that I bought a 30D body from the Canon outlet on eBay for £430. Its a factory refurbished unit and comes with a UK 1 year Canon warrenty. Its complete and as new.

I have been toying with the idea of holding out for a 40D but average UK prices are £750 and I could not justify best part of £300 when the differences aren't that great. They also sell 400D kits too. A 30D with 18-55 EF-S kit lens went for £480 recently from them.
