Well, I did it. I'm not sure what to think yet, but I went to Best Buy on Saturday with the intent of getting the 40d (that they had supposidly ordered & was going to be there Friday night) & since they didn't get it in, I came out with the 5d kit.

I know I'm going to love this camera - as all of you who have it do, but now I have to start all over buying lenses - and of course not the normal ones - the expensive! ones. Where do I start? I got the 24-103?L with it. What else do I need & where can I get the best deals?

Between a new light setup & this camera, I"m pushing $7k last week! Whew - good thing that week is over!

Thanks

Congratulations!! You will love the 5D. My 1st addition was the 24-105, but many love the 24-70. Either will be great. I tried both and the 24-105 best met my needs, but yours may be different. Got a good flash?

A nice lens to add would be the 50 1.4... minimal cost (comparatively) and a fine lens on the 5D - Offers a high aperture, sharp images, and a good set range for a full frame camera. Of course everyones needs are very different when it comes to lenses.

Those are three good stores to shop from.

As far as what to get, it really depends on what you're going to be shooting.

Once you start to use the 5D you wont regret buying it for one minute, ive used 30D's & a few other cams but nothing gives me as much pleasure in use than the 5D, just something about it.

I agree the 50mm 1.4 would go very nicely, Ed swears by his, its still on my list of things to get, the 24-105L is an ideal walkaround lens, ive got some nice shots taken with this lens, the amount of detail captured is quite stunning.

well now you can get a flash, 70 200 L ( either f4 or 2.8 with image stabilisation or not depending on ur budget ) , and i think you got a good setup.

you can find trusty reviews on photozone.de

oh you can also get the sigma 70 200 2.8 but it's not has good as canons.

oh and btw ... you need skills :D

I know it's not the same, but I do have the 50mm 1.8 II...will this work on my 5d, or is that another one that'll work with my 20d only.

I also have the 55-200 lens that I have for my 20d - will this one work on my 5d?

This is going to be so confusing for me. Since they have different sensors, I won't know which lenses will fit it now.

So far, the kit lens is the only L lens that I have - and hopefully will need...at least for now.

I do a lot of business with the 3 companies that you listed - my 20d actually came from Beach. And I just got done spending $3000 at the other 2 last week.

Any EF lens will fit the 5D. EF-S Lenses will only fit crop cameras.

I have the 430EX flash for my 20d...and actually I don't use flash a whole lot. With my new lights, the camera's smart enough to not have to use it - it actually is better without the flash. But I've only had it for 1 day of use. Except when I'm walking around & not with my lights, then I use my flash. ( I use continuous lighting - not strobes by the way)

Thanks Bill. That's good to know. I only have 3 lenses for my 20d, and really had no intention of getting the 5d, so never really paid attention to what would eventually go on it.

First lens after the 24-105L would be the 17-40L. You'd fall in love with wide, I swear :D

Then a 135L. And a 28/1.8 (or 35L). Then throw in a 50 for good measure.

I have a tamron 17-50 lens for my 20d, that I KNOW won't fit my 5d, and I actually find myself using it more on the 50mm end, than the 17mm area. Unless I'm taking a shot of a large group of people, but then I can just zoom out with my feet.
