I don't quite get what the mini to hot shoe adapter is for?

580ex goes on the female hot-shoe end of it, and the mini plugs into the Pocketwizard

ah...see I'm clueless - I thought the PW attached straight to the flash unit itself with no more parts needed...

580EX II has a sync port. Gadget Infinity slaves come with a hotshoe, pocket wizards do. If you go with GI make sure you get the right version, studio or hotshoe.

Yes. That one includes one transmitter and one receiver. No harm having more than one transmitter, it means you can put one on each camera.

Hello! I'm here anyways, just reading about the beginnings of your planned journey into off camera lighting...A journey I have been planning and equipping for for quite some time.. I was actually playing with my strobes earlier tonight, trying to learn! Still in the early stages of off camera lighting though :( but getting better :)
