I'm thinking about upgrading from my Canon 350D. What would everyone suggest as a good set up from that? I never do any sports so I don't need multiple shots. I usually do portraits, stills, and landscapes. I'm not a professional, just my hobby so price is a factor.

A used 20D or 30D would be a good upgrade (especially if budget is a concern).

Why are you looking to upgrade? What are you hoping to get out of it? As Mark said, the 20D, 30D is a good less expensive body upgrade. I don’t know what glass you have in your arsenal, but maybe you might think about adding a new lens. It all depends on why your looking to upgrade.

I just picked up a 30D and am loving it. I also upgraded from a 350D, great camera but the 30D is in a different league.

I was thinking about upgrading for a couple of reasons. First, I was having trouble with my 350d front focusing. I called one camera repair shop and they gave me a rough estimate of $250 - $300. Well I can buy a brand new one for around $450 so that doesn't seam worth it. Second and most important, the low light focusing is an issue. As an recent example I was shooting at the zoo the day, it was a very sunny day but most animals were in the shade. Not dark shade like in a cave but just under a tree or an overhang. Most of the time it would take 2 or 3 tries to get the focus and then it didn't look all that great to me. I went to manual focus and seamed to get it a lot better. Meter show plenty of light even shooting at 200 iso.

You might want to check out this thread. Guy fixed his own front focus problem. Looks pretty simple.

I'm buying a Canon, I don't know if 30D is enough to me.
I'm an amateur, but I like photograph very much.
My aim is landscape, person, and animal.

Having upgraded from a 350D to a 30D this year, I have to say it's a fairly decent step up. There's a noticeable improvement in AF, especially AI Servo, as well as the ability to shoot at 5fps. (As a motorsport photographer, it was like a breath of fresh air compared to the rather limiting XT). Image quality remains about the same, although the "keeper rate" is higher with the 30D.

The larger size, the Quick Control dial in the back and the "standard" LCD location on top of the body are all welcome upgrades over the more compact layout on the XT.

With the frenzy over the 40D, this is a pretty good time to snap up a 30D on the retail or used market.

I upgraded a few months ago and went with the 5D. I still have the XT and wanted a camera that would be a real upgrade in IQ and features. The FF and 5D features seemed to be right for me. Additionally, the big difference is that, no matter what the upgrade to the 5D is, I'm pretty confident I won't need it (not to say I won't want it). Like you, I rarely take sports and the FPS is not that significant a feature to me. At the time, the 30D and XT were similar in IQ and the difference seemed to be in handling. The 40D seems like it might be a heck of an upgrade now.

I'm going through the same decision process.
If I save $600 by getting the 30D instead of the 40D
will I hate my decision in a few months?
The 5D is really financially out of the question right now...

I upgraded to a 30D and LOVE it. I was going to wait for the 40D or the MK III, but found a 30D for $600. Fits my needs for now. I will upgrade again in a few years maybe...
