after looking through my manual it looks like I should have shot on green box mode! I generally shoot Av and this might have messed up my metering cause the camera will meter ambient light and not account for the flash.
Try using full manual when shooting flash. Seriously, This way you can control how much ambient mixes with your flash. Since the flash is automatic, it will (kind of) take care of itself, to adjust flash exposure use FEC.
And, when using manual flashes (a must when you start using more than 1 flash, if you want to stay cheap) it allows you to control the flash via aperture. So, you set aperture to properly expose the flash portion, then set your shutter speed to balance the ambient light to the flash exposure.
As a slight aside, ambient exposure need not be proper. You may want to lower ambient, so the scene is primarily lighted by flash, or you may want to include plenty of ambient, only using the flash to fill in shadow areas.
Hmm, there are a really good set of flash tutorials on these forums here They're stickies in the small flash and studio lighting forum. Very much worth a look. Also -- if you ever get into moving the flash off the camera strobist.com
has tons of great info, and some spectacular shots all with explanation on how they were created.
