There isn't one... Sorry. They charge a premium because there is simply less demand for the product and because it is apple, there is not a huge amount of competition for their APPLE product, thus they can basically set the price they want.:(

Ding ding ding! I think we have a winner.

OK, that makes more sense.

And for those of you playing along at home, my latest attempt at getting labels to work still failed. It wouldn't worry me so much, except it has me wondering if anything else doesn't get copied correctly in a two machine setup that's going to come back and bite me later.

I know the horizon is tilted, I will fix it later- and that isn't sensor dust - it is a hot air balloon...

Kvack all!

Someone needs to help me with a little bit of explaining..

I just priced a new iMac I have my eye on, for deployment around Dec-Jan. Apple literally wants a THOUSAND BUCKS for 4GB of RAM. That's pretty frightening. I can hand-build an entire PC for less than that. Or get a whole Mac Mini with 2GB of RAM and all the nice stuff included. What's going on?

So I thought of another plan, use my Mini instead. It can't do dual monitors so I will need to smack the biggest honkin' display I can get on it (no 30", sorry, that requires dual DVI outputs which again the Mini can't do). I price up an Apple Cinema display, and again find it is TWICE the cost of every other monitor out there of equivalent size.

What's with the funky pricing? I know Mac is good stuff (I LIKE it!) but something tells me I am seriously getting taken for a wild ride with the hardware!

I'm willing to pay but it HAS to be justified. So far I can't find any product literature which even hints at what's better about these things. Maybe if Apple had some new super sophisticated laser rendering system with a color gamut that blows the socks off everything else I could consider the monitor, but if it's just a monitor in a nice aluminium frame, this is seriously going to put a ding in my 300 f/2.8 ISL budget.

check with crucial.com for the memory sticks used by the mac you want. Their memory proved ultra reliable on all the macs in the art and music departments on my former campus and all my mac using buds rely on them for memory. It is much less expensive.

Cool, thanks. I was thinking of doing the memory upgrade myself and the prices are much more forgiving. That solves the RAM problem :)

As for the display, I might just go with one of the large Viewsonics that I know and love. The nice thing about DVI and the Mini is that you can indeed bring your own display.. it's even encouraged ;)

Look at the Dell LCDs - the widescreen 2007WFP and 2407WFP model have a S-IPS LCD which doesn't do colorshift...

HERESY!!!!! The Cult of Mac will burn you for this!! ;)

Actually, I'd understand if the computers themselves were higher priced (they are, there is a bit of a premium) but not quite why the other hardware is, because the other stuff is still subject to market competition. Apple's HD displays are fighting in the same market as everybody else now that the playing field has been levelled by DVI. I could put that 23" display on my current box.. it'd work just fine..

Wu helped me sort out the RAM, initially I was gonna have a heart attack but it's all good now. $1K buys a lot of glass.. really..

oooooo......

The 2407 (in my $$ at home) is 33% cheaper than the Apple 23". Now that is a lot to ask for.

At one time - not sure if this is true or not - I was once told that the Apple and the Dell LCD both contained the same OEM LCD panel....

Ok, well then you are just paying a premium for the name. It is like buying Nike clothing.
