That's the turn-off for me too. However, I'm also cutting down on my personal computing to limit it to what's needed - web browsing, Skype, my personal email, and photography, so a Mini happens to fit right in with those limitations. I'll probably pick up a WD Mybook with Firewire for directly attached storage, and back the whole lot up over onto the NAS. (custom NAS running FreeBSD.. once a sysadmin, always a sysadmin). Photoshop will run just fine with 2GB.

I got a quick question for ya, what's the best software that is easy to setup for home NAS system?

I am not likey to go to a mac system. it just costs to much money. I can get a better system setup for PC, and as everyone knows it's cheaper.

However I was thinking about changing the setup, running a laptop and have a NAS system setup for file storage. However again everything comes down to cost.

In fact to be honest I more than likey wouldn't think about doing it due to a couple of games coming out this year, that I just don't see myself playing on a console.

Don't know about the NAS. I run a totally custom configuration - FreeBSD, with my own config of software. Unless you're keen to become a hardcore UNIX sysadmin I would not recommend trying that.

Agreed the Mac is not for everybody. Notice I bought the cheapest Mac.. ;)

I suppose no one around here ever wakes up in the middle of the night just longing for a good cup of coffee....

....this machine is going to be the end of me...it's waywayway to easy to make myself a cup :lol:

now that I'm finished and nice and toasty warm inside and out...it's back to bed. And I'll see if the caffeine is gonna do something that will keep me up rather than put me to sleep.

oh, and I bought a refurbished mac for our 3rd one. The price was good (about half what you are talking about) and we can add our own ram. You could think about that...

g'night for the 3rd time.

3rd time...either that means I'm charming or....

...I'm never going to get sleep tonight!

ttfn

hah... when I have coffees at night, I sleep better :| not sure why that is... it's kinda odd :|

Ooooo wow! That IS cheap!

And I just discovered the power of VMWare Fusion.. I am running Windows inside a Mac just like any other application.. VERY trippy!!

Unity is amazing. I can pull Winamp out to my Mac's desktop just like it was made to be there. Absolutely cool. And you can drag and drop files straight onto your Windows desktop from your Mac, so you can share and share alike.. absolutely amazing!!

sorry if im teaching you to suck eggs but you do have the windows running on a separate partion/ hd other wise your leaving the files in the mac risk of infection and corruption from all the normal windows nasties

Virtual machines use a separate 'virtual disk' image where everything is kept separate from the Mac. However you raise some very interesting questions. Normally, in pure virtual machine/virtualization environments, the hypervisor (virtualization software manager) keeps every VM separate from every other VM. They don't even know each other, much less the host operating system, exists.

HOWEVER.... with Unity technology, that's blurring the lines: Windows apps can be displayed on the Mac desktop. I'm wondering: is it just a simple DISPLAY, or does it go further than that?

I suspect that it's just a display. When dragging and dropping, the files have to be transferred through the hypervisor. I'll do a bit more reading.

Hope your test results come back OK!

I suspect it'll be all right. VMWare isn't a newcomer to this business.. I'm pretty sure they designed it securely. Only specific things should be allowed 'out' of the VM environment.. I'm sure they took care of that.

Well, there is more surface area for the dust to gather on for one thing. And more power to charge them means more static. Just a guess on my behalf though.

Greg_C wrote in post #3986454 (external link)
My guess is the great surface area has a better chance to build up a static charge and attract the dust. The greater the surface area the greater the capacitive charge.

Balance that with any dust on the smaller sensor will be more obvious, since it gets enlarged more, and a speck of dust of any given size will affect more pixels on the higher-density sensor, and I'd call it a wash. My 5D's no worse than my 20D, and both see about the same lens changes without being turned off.

Tactical bombing is kinda giving it more that it really was . But I understand where you are coming from. Personally, I think the development of the tank is equally important.

Leads to the blitzkrieg when combined with the aircraft as well.

You wrong them. The first dedicated ground-attack A/C were used in WWI. Strategic bombing as well. Zeppelins, Gothas over London, squadrons held back from the front for defense of England, Trenchard's Independent Air Force bombing Germany.

OBTW - where I've been (crop, nothing else done from a small JPEG on the 20D - it sharpens up nicely but I haven't got NR software handy):

Yeah...tactical is giving it a bit much of a discription, but it is where it started with that pin point accuracy of hand held bombing
Ahhh...can't forget the tank. From those HUGE monsters that raced about the field going like 5 mph...leading up to the Panzer and Tiger tanks

It is....from all sides of the world. Many of the advancements would not exsit today if it were not for the developments during those years and the yearn to be the fastest, most heavily armed, undetectable and most manuverable.

They moved well beyond hand bombing fairly early on. Sop. Camels had racks of up to 8 Cooper bombs for trench strafing. The Dolphin had even more; and of course the bigger bombers (largest bombs of WWI were, IIRC, around 500 Kg) had to use racks.

lets not forget that before they mounted machine guns to planes they had people using rifle to try and shoot down a plane. oh that would have been fun.

One of the things that amaze me is the Germans. They are the ones that developed rockets, jet engines and the modern motorway and put them in to practical uses.

Rockets - Goddard (US). And let's not forget "the rockets' red glare" from the Congreve rockets of the early 1800s. Difference in scale but that's about all.
Jets - the British also had an operational jet fighter in the latter stages of WW I. The first gas turbine engine was by Coanda in the 'teens.
Most of German transport was animal-driven throughout the war; major transport and resupply was still by rail. Rail interdiction leading up to D-Day was a major factor in the success of the landings.
