You got off cheap! We went for an anniversary dinner a couple years back. The two of us, who didn't drink alcohol, easily topped $100 before tax and tip. Amazing food and great service -- but definitely one of the pricier meals we've ever had. For relatively simple fare, it adds up very quickly.

My brother and his wife celebrated an anniversary there with a bottle of wine recommended by their server. I think the two of them nearly doubled your total for five. I find it hard to spend that much on a meal. That's glass money! ;)

Amen to that!

Dang.... I had to make it to class or I would have taken this shot:

Sunrise
Mount Hood in a light pink tint (sun was behind it)
Grassy field with fog
Hot air balloon
Light clouds in pink color...

OH MAN!!! Curse this school!!

School does suck.. it's so not worth it.

Hey scouts, what's a good compass? What should I be looking for?

I am a n00b user who usually navigates by GPS but occasionally could benefit from a traditional compass when the GPS craps out. My current Garmin does not have the hardware compass that my previous 76MAP had. Landscape photogs need one.. it helps determine where your sunrise and sunsets pop out from. Amongst other things.

I have a freebie that doesn't display the right direction half the time. Not something I'd like to rely on. RELIABILITY is absolutely critical.

I would get one with the flip up part with a mirror and a little slot to look through... I am in class right now or I would get you a link/model to one.

OI!!!! Something SIMPLE, I am not very smart ;)

Also, how do these magnetic north and true north things screw with my readings?

Briefly, this is the situation. I will be at point A, aiming a telephoto at point B. The GPS map indicates point B is 312 degrees. I need to find direction 312 degrees is in.

As I will be shooting under shelter, with no convenient method of securing a GPS fix, it's not very useful....

OK, I am DUMB.

I have a watch with a digital compass that I have no problems reading.

Now if only I could remember where I left the watch!

Great....found the watch.....the two compasses totally disagree on where is north.

I guess navigation is one of the skills in life that I will never be able to do :(

You just want a simple one that will allow you to turn the degree dials. http://www.thecompassstore.com/starter.html (external link) something like that is all you need

Your map should give you a declination setting to set the declination of your compass from magnetic North to True north. (It varies based on location) And then you just go from there. It is kinda hard to explain it in type sorry :(.

OK..

I am assuming the needle will always point at magnetic north. So if I line up N with the needle, and look at which direction 312 deg is, that should give me my line of sight?

Garmin Metroguide AU doesn't give any declinations either :p

Yea it will get your darn close at least. A lot of the time I never miss with it.

What you do, is the top knob will turn and you'll line the arrow on the baseplate with the 312 deg. then line up the arrow that move with magnetic north and walk towards the place pointed at by the baseplate arrow.

I suspect it'll be all right. VMWare isn't a newcomer to this business.. I'm pretty sure they designed it securely. Only specific things should be allowed 'out' of the VM environment.. I'm sure they took care of that.

SANS actually had an article on VM dangers very recently. Check out www.incidents.org (external link) and look in the archives they have on the bottom of the page (specifically this article http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=3411 (external link)). The baddies out there are getting smarter all the time.

Hey Yoda - finally found what I was looking for- I had these when I worked for the Wireless ISP:
http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

AWESOME! When wanting to find a tower on a far hill I would look on the topo and find 148deg - then get up on the rooftop and point the binocs towards 148 and I see it in the cross-hairs. VERY COOL! Kinda expensive for a compass - but they are really great in terms of pointing accuracy. With a normal compass, the compass could be pointed at 148deg, but there is no definitive direction - when looking through a binoc with cross-hair and heading you KNOW when you are on that heading.

Moooooooo.

I'm trying to straighten my office. I went into a drawer I rarely use, and found about a dozen CF cards. One of them was 256 megs, and one was 128 megs. I won't tell you what the other ones were, but only two of them would have held a single RAW image from my 1Ds MK II.

How things have changed in the last few years.

Needless to say, they will soon be landfill.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!
