HEY!!! What'd I DO??
You didn't do anything; 3Turner cherishes the delusion he'll eventually catch up with you in posts. My point is that his only prayer would be if you took a 25-year vacation from POTN. And I'm not suggesting you should.

More info | Lightstream wrote in post #4007175 *HUGE SIGH...* I guessed it was theoretically possible for them to 'jump' the hypervisor especially with so many points of ingress/egress. I just didn't want to believe it. Is there no hope at all? You know, if even VM systems can be attacked, what makes the Mac community think they're bulletproof safe? It's really all just a matter of time. VM systems are supposed to be even more isolated, and the challenges of working out whether you are running on a completely invisible (theoretically) host and attacking at a level BELOW the [virtual] hardware: yet they can circumvent THAT! Not difficult to see why I'm losing all hope. I think the Mac days of "invulnerability" are certainly numbered. I think it's more of a supply/demand thing now than anything else. The cost of creating the exploit has to be less than the payoff for creating it -- and as Macs make a resurgence, the potential payoffs are growing larger. -David

Gotta say that aside from the size, I love the glossy display on my Libretto. And the size is the price I pay for a machine that fits into one end of a Domke bag. In fact, it's what I'm using now in Columbus, OH. Jon

I guess navigation is one of the skills in life that I will never be able to do ![]() It's called "declination". Magnetic North and true North aren't the same direction from almost anywhere. And how far away from true North mag North is varies from place to place, and over time. You need to check that both compases are using the same declination. You also need to keep them away from each other - magnets throw off a compass. Jon

puddlepirate44 wrote in post #4007152 Cool, Jon!! Thanks for your history input. I can never get enough of that stuff. Nice shot, too. Wha.... Huh? Did you just say.... Oh, I feel weak.... Thanks, Puddle - nothing longer than the 100-400 on the 20D, so it had to be a tight crop. I need the 1D III and 500 f/4, and maybe to upgrade the 20D to 40D for the buffer (I was filling it every 10 sec. on fly-bys) and extra pixels. Jon

Well, maybe one other lens in a single compartment insert. That's all I'll need. Basically if I do carry that rig, it will be 40D or 5D as the body, and pop a 24-105 or 17-85 on top for good measure. And a couple of TCs, memory cards, batteries - but you can stash those in any of the side pockets.

Or where possible I'd ditch the laptop..... FREEEEEEEEEEEEE YEAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Yeah - I had a C400 at work for a while, until the mandated "standard configuration" made it unstable. When I controlled the configuration, it was rock-solid. Now I have an R-100 that the configuration-management idiots haven't reached yet. Sub-kilogram and just works. Never been re-installed and it's a good 3 years old. Unstable Windows? Yeah, if you let the idiots play with it. Properly managed, it's as solid as anything out there. Jon

Back in the old days when I was in the navy, we had a gyro compass on board ship that was supposed to give us true north. We also had numerous magnetic compasses so we had to understand magnetic deviation and all that foolishness. The magnetic compasses had huge iron balls (no jokes) mounted on either side to keep the ships magnetic field from influencing the compass. Every couple of years they had to degauss the entire ship. I'm not sure how it was done, but I know that for weeks afterwards, hair would grow on the palms of my hand. I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I only venture near the place in response to your anguished pleas, and this is the thanks I get?! Jon
