I won't make anymore. If I ever had made any that hurt their feelings.

The specific incident they seemed to be most offended by was when CDS 'punished' Permie by banning her to WF. They were particularly insulted that a moderator was involved. I can understand that, and I apologized on behalf of the forum. They're still a little 'cool' to me, but we're making progress. :|

gee thanks

You know I'm just pulling your leg:p. Can't let the picture judge leave before the end of the contest

and you know, I've thought a lot about it, and am genuinely impressed that as a group they do seem to care about the image they give off (which is very different from before) and they do seem to be making steps to change that. I read a lot of new threads and while I admit that I missed the one the Chief referred to, I see a lot of people offering basic advice to questions that they would have ridiculed or slammed before. And really, it's very nice to see a shift over there. While I feel like I'll always be persona non-grata there, I do see a huge change in the dynamic over the course of the last 6 weeks...baby steps at first but more radical as they really "saw" their image in others eyes.

It's been very instructive to me too...examining myself I mean....and while I still am a terrible cut up, I am trying to be more aware of how I represent myself.

I really do not see much of the 'bad' in the WF as all the mods do a great job of cleaning up the spills when they do happen. All in all....I do noitce though that there is not much banter around about someone being mean to another person n00b...as I would have seen only 4 to 6 weeks ago.

So they did not care that Izak (the_incubus) was banished there one night by CDS?? THAT was classic  I still laugh about it today.

And with that, I seem to be caught up. Now to see where I've slipped to in the post tally.

I was wondering if we'd pick up speed before you got caught up.

Sledge hammer with the head wrapped in 50 meters of 22 AWG copper hooked up to a 12V DC power supply. Apply vigorously and repeatedly to the medium needing sanitization.

I'm going to make a note of that for later. Could come in quite handy. ;)

That's okay. I'm number 22 on the WF chit chat thread.:o

You're growing on them, Chief. I've even seen some of the (in)famous recommend some people turn to you for help.

wouldn't you guys miss me if I took a 25yr hiatus?

Of course we would. We'd also figure that there was a serious imbalance in the coffee and internet forces at work.

They really are doing a good job of shouting down anyone who comes on too strong. Even Tim got their collective disapproval for a critique he posted a couple days ago.

Wow. Good for them!

Back in the old days when I was in the navy, we had a gyro compass on board ship that was supposed to give us true north. We also had numerous magnetic compasses so we had to understand magnetic deviation and all that foolishness. The magnetic compasses had huge iron balls (no jokes) mounted on either side to keep the ships magnetic field from influencing the compass. Every couple of years they had to degauss the entire ship. I'm not sure how it was done, but I know that for weeks afterwards, hair would grow on the palms of my hand.

Shades of the Philadelphia Experiment.

The ship I was on still had all the degaussing gear. All the coils. Part of my job (rate) was to occasionally correct the mag compass. It took the better part of a day and it involved moving the iron balls (quadrantal spheres), Flinder's bar, and the horizontal and "heeling" magnets inside the compass binnacle in order to eliminate as much mag compass error as possible. We had our mag compass on the bridge, right by the helm, so it was a real pain to Spin the Compass. The binnacle was a big ol' brass thing that looked like one of those old time deep sea diver's suit that Pete posted earlier. Later, the mag compass was moved up to the Flying Bridge making the job much easier.

I have no idea why I'm telling you this. Or why it's still in my head. :o

Yeppers. In the Coast Guard, back then, the rate was the equivalent to two Navy rates, the QM and the SM. The CG didn't have a QM school yet, so I had to go to the Navy school in Orlando. I had to take both the SM and the QM A-schools.

Sorry for the ignorance... but I am not up on the navy/CG stuff. Is QM like E-4 or 5ish?

QM stands for Quartermaster. E4 is a pay grade (used to be 3rd-class petty officer).

Let me see if I rmember this right.

QM is rate.
E-4 is rating.

It's been a while.

Ok. Good to be able to compare it with what I know, army ranks.
