it definitely looks soft w/o the usm. can you post where your AF point was in the normal photo?

With that focal length (10 or 22), at that f-stop, at that target range, it really shouldn't matter. DOF should be more than adequate to get everything in focus.

I would wonder whether there might have been some sort of haze causing the non-reflected portion of the picture to lose sharpness, while the reflection in the water would cure the haze somehow? Or I could be making it up as I go along. ;)

The new Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, both of which are L (luxury)-series lenses incorporating a high-performance Image Stabilizer, feature optical systems utilizing special optical materials such as fluorite to correct chromatic aberrations, making possible high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANSWER TO A PRAYER!!!

(wrong prayer though!! I have a serious emergency that needs fixing or I might never get to buy glass again :( )

Basically - the xxD series doesn't have all the cool AF options your 1D has :-D

Mebbe not, but it does let you choose a single AF point if you don't want all 9 (15) arguing with each other.

but you can use all points can't you? I remember that from the 30D.

I'm just trying to figure out if you used one (the CP) then the trees and the water peak would be in focus and if you used all, those would be as well as the sky but not necc. the mountain peak.

I went over to DOFMaster and put in some numbers:

Assuming the 40D, at 22mm, at f/8, and the camera focusing on something 100 feet away, everything from 9.5' to infinity should be in focus.

And if you assume the camera focused on something 12' away, everything from 5.6' to infinity should be in focus. I don't think focus is the problem.
