Well. I did some lens tests tonight on my new camera and the old one using all my lenses.
What I found amazed me.
My 17-85 at 85 cm is spot on on both cameras.
However look at the results at 17mm !!!
No wonder I wasn't getting sharp images at wide angles. I can't believe I hadn't noticed it.
This is a crop of the test chart.
I focused on the black line at the top!!!

I think you will find that's his 350D that's having that problem. not the 40D

Presumably, that was taken on manual focus. I will check my 17-85 after that!

That's bad:(

There are some know issues with the 40D and focusing.
Might pay to have a read up.

Ive heard some are onto their 3 copy of the 40D. When you think of the # of units canon produce, they cant check them all.

why be confused? Peter hasn't said anything about any problems with the 40D, only 350D.

anyway just because a handful of people report problems doesn't mean that there's a problem. it also doesn't mean that there is a problem with that model camera.

if you have any questions you should test it out yourself.

No no no... Don't panic!! It's only on the 350D, and even with the 50mm it is forward focusing. It is probably since the focus mechanism was replaced a few months ago after my brother dropped it.
I didn't notice it because at 70 or 80 mm it was focusing better than before.

There is a 12 month warranty on the repairs, so I will take it in tomorrow on the way to work.

Nope that was auto focus.
I had the focus chart on a door opened to 45 degrees, and the camera on tripod. always used auto focus on the dark stripe in the middle.
