I learned something today... I didn't realise that catuses grew flowers like that.

Most cacti flower, however larger species like this one only flower once they get to maturity, which is 5+ years of age. They're a night flowerer too, so combined with lack of mature specimens in NZ makes this quite a rare flower :) This is a small branch recently taken off a mature plant approx 2m tall, and it probably won't flower again for another 4-5 years when it too matures. The mature plant has 20 odd flower buds on it, and if even half of them develop into flower's I'm in for one heck of a show :D

i discover what i still need to get, because i go to put my hands on a certain focal length/speed combo and then i remember i dont have it - which means i cant get some of the shots that i have planned - on a day out for fun thats no big deal but during a paid shoot its frustrating

You asked for advice, even if you don't take it... I think as Scott that one or other of the 17-55 or 24-105 will stay parked up in your bag as a backup. If I were in your shoes I'd be seriously considering the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG Macro. It's a more than capable lens, sharp and very fast to focus. 77mm filter too. Sure it doesn't have IS, but I haven't come across a situation where I've needed it yet. We use it for weddings and are more than happy with it's performance.

lol oh great, throw another one into the mix LOL

how does it compare to the canon version with IS? cos for a lens like that i will only be buying once, i would want to get it right first time

on another topic, i'm not sure about your recent cacti shots... given the quality of your work on your site, i think you can do better. they look a little snapshotty to me

Some sparkler fun from last night. Even big kids can have a good time with tame sparklers. I wont mention the rockets they tried to make

Hey guys. Well my job interview is done - sounds quite promising at this stage! The guy just needs to confirm it with the big boss.

Best of luck, Daniel! :D

Well, flatty texted me this morn to ask for my Melbourne cup horse pick. I hadn't even followed it this year, so randomly picked the number 6.
He Picked 12.
Turns out I picked the long shot, BOP Horse......... Efficient.. ($22.40 to win..)

Not sure if there is any truth to this but it did make me laugh... so I thought I would share... ;)

===============

This has to be one of the funniest things in a long time. I think this guy should have been promoted, not fired. This is a true story from the WordPerfect Helpline, which was transcribed from a recording monitoring the customer care department. Needless to say the Help Desk employee was fired; however, he/she is currently suing the WordPerfect organization for "Termination without Cause."

Actual dialogue of a former WordPerfect Customer Support employee.
(Now I know why they record these conversations!):

Operator: "Ridge Hall, computer assistance; may I help you?"
Caller: "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."
Operator: "What sort of trouble??"
Caller: "Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."
Operator: "Went away?"
Caller: "They disappeared"
Operator: "Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"
Caller: "Nothing."
Operator: "Nothing??"
Caller: "It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."
Operator: "Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out??"
Caller: "How do I tell?"
Operator: "Can you see the 'C: prompt' on the screen??"
Caller: "What's a sea-prompt?"
Operator: "Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen?"
Caller: "There isn't any cursor; I told you, it won't accept anything I type."
Operator: "Does your monitor have a power indicator??"
Caller: "What's a monitor?"
Operator: "It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you w hen it s on ? ?
Caller: "I don't know."
Operator: "Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that??"
Caller: "Yes, I think so."
Operator: "Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall.
Caller: "Yes, it is."
Operator: "When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one??"
Caller: "No."
Operator: "Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."
Caller: "Okay, here it is."
Operator: "Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."
Caller: "I can't reach."
Operator: "OK. Well, can you see if it is??"
Caller: "No."
Operator: "Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over??"
Caller: "Well, it's not because I don't have the right angle -- it's because it's dark."
Operator: "Dark??"
Caller: "Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."
Operator: "Well, turn on the office light then."
Caller: "I can't."
Operator: "No? Why not??"
Caller: "Because there's a power failure."
Operator: "A power .... A power failure ? Aha. Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff that your computer came in??"
Caller: "Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."
Operator: "Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."
Caller: "Really? Is it that bad?"
Operator: "Yes, I'm afraid it is."
Caller: "Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them??"
Operator: "Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer!!!"

Don't know where Tony gets his crap on FF business from? Tony is right in that you do you do get what you pay for though. The latest version of the siggy 70-200 is great. If you don't have all weather sealed equipment, then a weathersealed lens is little use, so you end up paying twice as much for a lens with the only benefit being IS. Then again it may be worth it to you to have IS, it's just not to us at this point, there are other things I could spend $1500 on.
I haven't used both on an ongoing basis, so I can only go by reviews on various sites. Between them the IQ and focus speed is so close it's a non issue. Just comes down to whether you need the IS and Weather seal at double the price.

I agree with you on the cacti shots. Yellow wallpaper makes the tungsten thing difficult - they were shot on tungsten and cooled further in PS. Could be sharper too. I'll blame the $40 tripod :p
