I just purchased the 30D a few months ago and i bought the 28-135 lens kit with it. I am now looking around for a 100-300 mm lens. Anyone have any suggestions or sites? I would like to keep the price under $600. Right now I see the 100-300 mm with IS at BH Photo for around $540. Is this lens any good?
Thanks.

70-200 f2.8 and a 1.4X teleconverter. Costy but my keeper rate has gone through the roof, and the weight and lack of IS has forced me to concentrate on my technique, a very valuable lesson I would hate to have missed.

Honestly, I think your best bet for a telephoto zoom in your price range would be the 70-200 F/4L I know it isn't a 300mm, but on your 30d it has the equivalent of a 320mm lens on a full frame or film camera. I cannot speak higher for a lens in this price range. It is SHARP and has a great build. Plus you get to feel really cool people you are carying around a white canon L lens :)

This is one of my shots with this lens and a 30d

Good luck!

One question ... did you go from the 70-300 IS to the 70-200/2.8 or from the older 75-300 IS?

Two very different lenses, if we look at reviews, e.g. the ones on this site: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html (external link)

That new 70-300 IS certainly looks like a lens that might be very tempting for me ... even in addition to my 80-200/2.8.

Best regards,
Andy

First, I'm not aware of a Canon 100-300 mm with IS. Second, I had an aunt who told, "Buy nice, have nice". The 40-200mm f/4L is certainly nice and within budget. You can always add a 1.4x TC later. If you do decide this is the way you will go, I have one additional suggestion, buy a Canon TC. Too much electronics and changes every so often to depend on a third party TC in the years to come.

I agree. For your budget get the 70-200 f/4 L. You won't regret it. BTW, excellent shot.
