Why does my XTi not produce RAW when shooting JPG+RAW?

I just got an XTi recently, and wanted to try shooting in raw. So in the menu I changed to shoot in JPG + RAW. But what I get is two of the identical file, both in JPG.

What the heck?

So I changed to RAW only, and I get RAW with no problems... switch back to JPG + RAW and again, two JPGs. Is something wrong with my camera, or is there another setting somewhere I am unaware of???

i get two of the same image as well. but one is raw. they both are the same file size, and look the same when your looking at the data.. but on my computer.. the first one is the raw image, and the second one is jpg.
the raw one takes forever to load into a picture viewer, and the jpg one kicks up right away.

i dont know... is your computer able to read raw files?

i had to put software on my new one for it to read it.

Well, I'm just looking at the card though Windows Explorer (on XP)... and when I shoot in RAW only, the file extension is correct and the file size is 10 MB. (Instead of closer to 3)

It could be that the software which you are using to download the files has been set to automatically convert RAW files to JPG format. Look at the software preferences in the application to see if this may be the case.

EDIT: On second thought, you said that you are not having the same problem when downloading RAW files when not shooting RAW+JPG. Are you using the same method for downloading in both instances?

I'm not downloading them... just viewing them from Windows Explorer with the card still in the camera. And like I said when I shoot RAW only, I can see the .crw file extension and it is the correct size.

Well... Ok, I guess when I DO download them (copy and paste onto my hard drive), I get the same thing (two .jpg's)

I don't know for certain, but there could be a problem if you try to use the copy and paste function. Even though a camera or USB card reader appears as a mounted network drive, it actually is not. Windows just causes it to emulate a mounted drive.

And of course there is also the issue that (I believe) the XTi produces CR2 and not CRW files....

yeah - I think the answers in the FAQ. All photographers should get card readers anyway - they're much quicker most of the time, and work well with two+ cards. And, you can use them as impromptu flash drives.

it's window's fault... windows is retarded and can't handle two files with the same name in one folder... just use a card reader and the problem is solved

They don't save raw files when shooting in any of the scene modes. You have to be in a creative mode (Tv, Av, M, or P) to get RAW.
