Why does my XTi not produce RAW when shooting JPG+RAW?

I just got an XTi recently, and wanted to try shooting in raw. So in the menu I changed to shoot in JPG + RAW. But what I get is two of the identical file, both in JPG.

What the heck?

So I changed to RAW only, and I get RAW with no problems... switch back to JPG + RAW and again, two JPGs. Is something wrong with my camera, or is there another setting somewhere I am unaware of???

Let me guess, you're connecting camera directly to computer via usb cable?
May want to try using a card-reader instead, as it solves many problems, including this.

I think the problem has to do with Windows seeing the camera and expecting to see image files (and it doesn't recognize the .cr2 as an image.)

Using one of the programs that came with camera (EOS utility?) you should be able to do it directly with USB cable, but card-readers are my preferred method of getting images to computer for many reasons.

Yes, you are correct. I figured since it could see the .cr2 when shooting in RAW only, it should be able to do the same with JPG + RAW. Perhaps since there are two files with the same name it gets confused? I've been meaning to get a card reader anyway, so I guess I'll try again with that. But I'm pretty sure that you are probably right!

Thanks!

Other thing that would cause Jpeg only would be setting the camera to the full Auto setting (green rectangle still?).

You're right, it has to do with windows not being able to recognize two files with the same name in one folder... The best solution (by far) is to buy a 20$ card reader and just use that.. they are way faster anyway...

Also, windows released an update you can download that is supposed to enable you to view raw files as thumbnails, but I haven't been able to get it to recognize the files...

It hasn't been updated in quite some time. The last camera it worked with was the 350D/XT.

I was flicking around Canon's downloads the other day and spotted some downloads that mentioned being able to read raw files and create thumbnails for vista only - anyone tried it?

IrfranView Thumbnails takes care of that.
