Very pleased with my A80. However, I was taking a macro of a gold watch and although I got a nice crisp, bright image, it was lacking a bit in the 'goldness' department.
What setting can be adjusted to make the colours richer without necessarily increasing how bright they are?

It can be done in Photoshop of course, but I wondered if the camera could be adjusted somehow during shooting?

You can raise the saturation by using the Vivid mode. You have more control of the amount of over saturation by doing it yourself after taking the photo, but vivid makes a great "easy" adjustment.

Neutral mode de-saturates a little.

What exposure setting have you used ? I always have my A80 set to -1/3EV as default, and -2/3EV in very bright conditions. The A80 has a tendency to over-expose so this helps to saturate the colours a bit. Alternatively, you can use Vivid mode, as suggested.

You might also try the custom white balance setting for the lighting conditions you're photographing under. A close-up of a uniformly-coloured object may throw off the automatic white balance settings, so get a white sheet of paper and (can't use full auto for this) set the white balance to Custom. The camera will walk you through this.
