Just as an experiment I put a drop of honey on a mirror for the ants to get at. Gives some interesting effects but doesn't do much for stopping highlights.
If you are interested I did an animation of the shots used in the focus stack for #5 here

too busy with the group shots but works well on individual ants and fantastic detail on tricky subject.

Thanks for the comments all - much appreciated. I was suprised at the odd streaking effects in the reflections of some of the shots.
All the shots are focus stacked.

I like the one or two ant shots over the group -cool since it looks like the single ant is looking at its own reflection

The slightest little smudge on the mirror will change that area's reflectivity, and if you were using focus stacking software it may have gotten confused in the areas where the reflection is the worst (nothing to key off of). Those are my best two guesses for the streaking in the images.

Since you've got full control over your "studio" why not stop down a little, look for a magic angle, and take a single image. Might help you to figure out where the streaking is coming from. A third possibility that just popped into my head -maybe the lens was too open?...

An excellent idea Brian. It may not do anything for the highlights, but it certainly helps the overall lighting of the shot. The detail in these is fantastic.

The ants seemed to like it. #2 is admiring his reflection. :D

The streaking seems to be a mirror effect- it's present in the single images. it may be because I didn't clean the surface well enough - will try some windex equivalent :)
