Hi chaps .... I've had a look around but I'm not sure I've found what I want. I'd like to transfer from my CF card to a hard drive that I have already ... is there some kind of interface available. I've come across storage devices with their own in-built memory but I own the hard drive already and don't want to spend out on yet more memory. It would seem to be a fairly simple requirement. thanks for your time ... Roger

What type of hard drive? Are you trying to transfer to an HD in your PC? Then you just need a card reader (~$10). If you want to place your HD into an enclosure and then have a slot the CF can go into, that's a lot more.

I think he means like a cable from a card reader straight into a hard drive

AS in an external hard drive?

I just pull up my CF card window and my external hard drive window and drag and drop them so they are never on my PC hard drive...

I assume you meant that you want to copy images from your memory card to your USB harddrive without a PC. The ALERATEC USB COPY CRUISER PLUS - http://www.buyaleratec.com/usbcocrplpa3.html (external link) - has a built-in card reader and can copy data between memory cards and USB mass storage devices without a computer. The device seems to work as claimed but is extremely slow. While the manufacturer claims its a USB2.0 device, it appears to move data at USB1.1 speeds for some reason. The USB COPY CRUISER PLUS can be found at J&R for $45+shipping http://www.jr.com …zilla.datafeed.AAC+330100 (external link)

Thanks chaps ... I obviously didn't explain myself too well but Jack got it dead on so thanks Jack ... I'll be looking at that device. Best regards and thanks again for such a prompt response - what a great resource this is. Roger

You're welcome.

Ah, one important thing I forgot to mention about the ALERATEC USB COPY CRUISER PLUS -- it won't work with USB harddrives that are powered from the USB cable. The harddrive must have its own power supply.

FYI, I bought one of these and it didn't work with any hard drive I tried, even those with external power supplies. You might be able to get it to work, but be aware that the hard drive has to be formatted in FAT32, not NTFS, which is a pain. Also, the cruiser plus runs off of AA batteries, so it won't transfer a huge amount of files. It worked just fine trasfering to USB thumb drives though, but that is not much of a plus for transfering large amounts of compact flash cards.

This is what I use, but there are newer/faster models out there.

Cheapish if you supply your own drive, works off of AC or battery.

I would discourage you from transferring data from a card reader to external hd because it is very uncommon and there will be a lot of bugs that have not been worked out. Unfortunately this is how technology is and I would hate for you to lose any data.
