Hi, newbie to this site and after gaining so much knowledge and learning how to do this and how to that just by reading throught the threads on this site i thought it was time (well my 400D decided) it was time to ask for help. my camera is about 3 months old and on saturday morning i decided to go out and get some pictures of my son so i put in a fresh battery and off i went.
i managed to take two shots and on the third the mirror locks up the lcd display goes blank, i turn the camera off but the green power light stays on, i remove the battery leave for a few minutes then replace it. when i turn the camera on the green power light comes on and thats it no lcd, mirror still locked up and nothing wants to work. anyone else had similar problems.

Welcome aboard Doug :) Too bad that a problem like this had to lead you to your first post here.

I think my XT had a problem like the one you describe once. Fortunately everything was fine after I took out and reinserted the battery. Strange that it didn't help in your case. I don't know if taking out the little battery as well would make a difference. Did you try that?

Did you remove both batteries? The camera could have managed to garble it's configuration settings, and you must remove the backup battery to clear the configuration.

Send it in like you said and Canon should turn it around in a few days.

I hope it's within the 1 year standard warranty or you have an additional one!

If you do a search, you'll probably find others have had similar issues - I know I've read a few threads along those lines in the past few years, but I'm afraid the results have always been the same - the camera had to go to Canon for repairs.

One question, did you try another battery? Sometimes batteries can fail and Lithium-ion batteries fail funny. They keep their voltage for a long time but when going, they are not able to deliver their current. Thus, all the electronics will power up as they are very low current and the voltage is there. When the mirror solenoid or motor, whatever they have in there fires, it draw more current than the electronics and the battery may just not have enough to deliver.

BTW, I had this happen on a laptop. It would power up just fine and I could browse the BIOS all day long. As soon as the disk spun up, it was lights out. Replacing the battery solved the problem.

Anyway, just a thought. Your best advice has already been given, sent it on in and let Canon decide as it's still on warranty.
