Does the S3IS have the date stamp function? I' can't seem to find that function if any in the manual.

To be put on the image? No. You have to do it in software after/while downloading to pc.

You can print the date using direct print compatible printers.

Read Setting the DPOF Print settings that star on pg. 111 of the S3 IS advanced manual.
On pg. 113 you can read Date (On/Off): Adds the date to the print.

Edit: I will leave the text of my post intact for clarity, but LotsToLearn and Jon explain on the posts below why the S3 IS can not embed the date stamp on the picture file.

On pg. 114 there is a note that stumped me though:

  • Do not set the date in the DPOF print settings when printing images that have had the date embedded with the [Date Stamp] function. This may cause the date to be printed twice.

No further references to the [Date Stamp] function on the S3 IS or S5 IS manuals were found.

DPOF = Digital Print Order Format

Because there are actually a couple of Canon P&S that do offer the date on the image. I think a couple of the smaller S models. It's part of a "Postcard" setting or something like that. But that's not available on the Sx IS series.

I believe that the DPOF section is referring to Date Stamp which is only available in Postcard Mode on some other PowerShot cameras. The text wasn't edited for the S3 manual. So, no, you can't embed the date visibly in the photo at the moment you take it. You can later embed it in the picture via an action in PhotoShop, for instance, or manually.

LotsToLearn and Jon you are perfectly clear about the postcard setting possible in other cameras that embed the date in the file and that the S3 IS does not have.

I do not have a direct printing printer and can not experiment with the DPOF so I must ask:

Is the first part of my post about the date On/Off setting on DPOF also inaccurate or the 3S IS can be set to print the date at least using the DPOF format?

Date On/Off functionality is enabled as part of the printer's firmware; all the camera setting does is pass along that it's needed.

mrdgpzm, this is a bit late in coming, but maybe it will help someone else with the same (current) question. First, in the S3IS manual rpolitsr has it right to set the print settings to print date (page 113). Once that is done the date is available to the camera software (Easy-PhotoPrint) which you bring up after installing on your computer. On the layout/print tab you can click the date tab below and the date will appear at any place, size or color you choose, and you can click file-preferences and you will see the choice there for the date configuration which remains until you unclick the date tab in layout/print.
