Is the 5D twice as good as the 40D?

I ordered (and already paid for) a 40D yesterday at $1299. The store has a 5D in stock at $2699 and I am acutally thinking about going for the 5D but I am thinking that the law of diminishing returns has to apply here.

Am I right?

depends on what you are shooting. the 40D and the 5D hold strengths in some categories, not so much in others. What are you shooting with now?

Of course you are absolutely right! Whatever you do that makes you feel that you made the right decision means that ... you made the right decision. For that reason, no one else can tell you that you did not make the right decision. For me, there is no ROI because it is just a money-draining hobby, so the "law" (or guideline) of diminishing returns has no particular meaning or importance. All of the justification for money spent on hobbies boils down to, "it's what I wanted, so there".

That depends on if you think having full frame is twice as good as having 1.6x crop. ;)

Both cameras have their advantages and disadvantages. If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with the 5D even though it's two years older. But it would be a very difficult choice to make, so I'll take both.

I can't tell you how much I agree with this statement.

you might as well skip the 5D and go straight to the new 1Ds MKIII... That's like 4x better than the 40D if it's 2x better than the 5D... for only 6x the price... :P

I went with the 5D and have no regrets...There is no perfect camera for all styles of shooting as everyone knows...I like all kinds of photography and recently got into doing some BIF shots...most will say a 5D is not good for birds and I will admit it's not at it's best for birding...but if you know it's limitations and learn them it can do fairly well at whatever you want it to. I don't care if they come out with a newer 5D mark whatever...it still will not change the way my 5D takes shots now...:D

Here's a couple of BIF shots I got recently with my 5D...

It is a tough decision. I went with both.:D I still plan on getting the MkIII later in the year. If I had to give one up though, I'd keep the 5D.

Only you can say if you're right or not.....in some people's eyes, the 5D is a steal (certainly is a good FF option). And other people can't live without a 1D series. The 5D is certainly a different camera then the 40D.....and it depends on your needs/wants that will say if the 5D is really worth it.
