Wow, if I could get a 1DsMkIII for $4500, I'd figure OUT a way to afford it!

I'm thinking ed just saw the III part and not the big ole s because I would do the same Ron lol.

Currently weighing both options myself and I've realized that I want the 5D, BUT will wait for the 5DMk2.. and praying that my 20D makes it to spring 08 :)

I'm also trying to figure out what I should get next. I can afford to get a 40D next month and use the 30D as a backup or I can start saving up money for the 5D, but I don't want to pay for something that potentially will be outdated with a 5D MkII if that's ever released in the near future. I would invest the money for a 1Ds MkII or MkIII, but yeah... no money for that yet. Most of my income right now have been towards studio equipment. Canon is my gf... :p

Cameras are tools. If you don't know how to use them, it doesn't matter what you have. That being said, there's nothing like full frame.

would love to have a 5d but since i have efs that i love .. it was more cost effective to go with 40D for now. maybe when 5dmkII comes out, ill look into it. hopefully they'll come out with 24-70 f2.8 IS? that'll make upgrade worth it .. i love the IS on my 17-55 f2.8

I ordered (and already paid for) a 40D yesterday at $1299. The store has a 5D in stock at $2699 and I am acutally thinking about going for the 5D but I am thinking that the law of diminishing returns has to apply here.

Tough choice between the two. I can't help you decide, but if you decide to switch to 5D, I wouldn't pay $2699.
BuyDig has @ $2449

Also take a look at the quality of your lenses when making this choice. The 5d is brutal to low end lenses since you are seeing more of the edge of the glass in your image. The 40d's crop cuts that off so you can get away with more. I love my 5d for wedding photography. I find the 40d more usefull for just about everything else.

Get a 5d but don't pay that much. You can buy it new from a respectable online dealer (like buydig.com ) and knock off $200.

Buy the body that suites your needs. If you do a lot of portraits, weddings, etc. get the 5D, just can't be beat. If you do a lot of sports I would opt for the 40D as the frame rate, focus speed, etc. will be very beneficial.

Both are fantastic cameras, just fit the choice to your usage and you'll be all set.

I think that is the price of the Nikon D3..... perhaps that is what was being referred to. But agreed, if Canon came out with that price, I would jump on it.

I always thought the 5D was 1.6 times better?

;)

its actually 2 ½ times better

A APS-C sensor will fit inside the 5D (Full frame) sensor 2.56 times. :D
