It's quite simple actutally - you shouldn't compare the 5D against the 40D - compare it against the 1DsMk11 and for the money, it's a steal.

If you want/need full frame, you only have two choices (well, Canon anyway)

What is your measure first? Is it money? Well, right now,the market bears that price for the 5D for a reason. Yes, the market says it is worth twice the money.

Yes, I left out what I have now. I have a 10D, nothing wrong with it, just wanted to modernize. I think I am considering the 5D because I can have it now....

I still have my 10D's (one for backup, one being converted to IR as I type! :) ) and got the 5D in late July. Now they come out with the 40D ... I have absolutely NO regrets on getting the 5D ... None!

There are differences but the 5D is more to my liking and shooting FF again is incredible!

Donald Blue... that's an awesome photo. Very crystal clear. Which lens did you use for that?

Thanks...:) Those shots were taken with the Canon 400mm F5.6 L...handheld...I love this lens...when you get it on target it actually jumps into focus....:)

I ordered (and already paid for) a 40D yesterday at $1299. The store has a 5D in stock at $2699 and I am acutally thinking about going for the 5D but I am thinking that the law of diminishing returns has to apply here.

Am I right?

5d , else you will fall victim to the law of expensive upgrades.

I've had them all, some more than once...
1D III, 5D, 40D, 30D, 20D, XT, Xti, Rebel

What do I have now, just one ... 5D

me too, but I went to my local camera shop and tested out the new 40D. Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with it. Might grab the 40D instead and upgrade to the new 5D next year, if it comes out next year, which it should.

I would love a 5D b/c I shoot mainly landscapes and I favor the wide angle. Full frame would be wonderful to have.

But if I can get nearly the same image using my 350D and 10-22, then it makes it difficult for me to justify the cost of the 5D.

I don't shoot weddings and I have no need for ISO 1600, etc so this aspect of the 5D is of no benefit to me.

If I could get a 5D for under $1500 then maybe I could justify it.

Oh that's easy. If you already have a body to use of a few months and can afford 2600$ on a new one I'd cancel the 40D order and hold on till February when we'll have the 7D launched. i have a really strong feeling it will be around that price and even nicer feature wise then the 40D.
