It's quite simple actutally - you shouldn't compare the 5D against the 40D - compare it against the 1DsMk11 and for the money, it's a steal.
If you want/need full frame, you only have two choices (well, Canon anyway)

If you already have a body to use of a few months and can afford 2600$ on a new one I'd cancel the 40D order and hold on till February when we'll have the 7D launched. i have a really strong feeling it will be around that price and even nicer feature wise then the 40D.
