This started out cool, but as you will see I got rather pi$$ed off...
I went to update the XP machine w/ sp1 (I have reservations about it too) and so I downloaded it from megashaft.com and started w/ express. Ok, so I start to unpack it and it apparenly needs to get on the 'net to install it. What kind of crap is this? I recon it is so it can scan ur hd whilst ur downloading. Ok, so I get another version and gives me a SP1 Setup can't update a checked (debug) system w/ a free (retail) version of SP1 or vice versa. Oh what a worthless piece of useless crap winxp is and bill gates who is only concerned w/ screwing the public. I sincerely hope that the US Gov't gets the balls and sues him so hard that his great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren will still be suffering miserably. Of course that will not happen. There are a million other things that could happen and the end of the day, I'd sit back and enjoy something really bad to happen to both bill gates and megashaft. The part that is really bad is that any tech support you get from that hideous company you have to pay an arm and leg for! If you don't believe me, go to the site and look up the tech support yourself! Now what is the icing on the cake is that xp is a seriously screwed up OS and that isn't worth the CD is on. Megashaft where God forbid you get free tech support and an OS that is woth more than the CD is is written on.

Now I could send away for CD, but that means disclosing my home, where I live and I have a really funny feeling that I will get inundated w/ crap mail, as they are sell-outs. This is NOT what American is about, we need to unite and kick megashaft and shaft bill gates right where it hurts (both literally and metaphorically)! That is one hassle I don't want and well I am fed up w/ crap this crap OS! Man I wish Steve Jobs had done it right and now we'd be Apple instead of PC. I have no problems with the PC platform, rather the OS. As a platform it is cool and upgradable to the umpteenth kind.

I'd love a Mac. But it would cost me $5,000 to replace apps. :(

Not that I'd give up my PCs anyway....

Ok let me see if I got this straight, you want to upgrade your OS. You don't like Bill Gates because he wants to charge you for using his product? Bill Gates should be giving away his product because he is rich. So how is Bill Gates screwing you?
Is megashaft a free download site or something?

i've been having problem with windows for years, 3 months ago switched to Mac, oh boy, what a beautiful machine to work with.

Never had a problem, don't even need to reboot for weeks, and i have all the softwares i need, sometimes alternative solutions are much cheaper and better to use.

Is megashaft a free download site or something?

I don't consider a service pack to be an upgrade...xp sp1 is a service pack, an update to existing program (win xp) to fix what they messed up the first time. I think it is their duty you (the customer) to provide free of charge any such product that fixes their screwup. This supposedly fixes some security issues as well as allows USB2.0 on there which is what I was after.

I have an OEM copy of xp already on hand that I installed. I built my own computer as I don't need the stuff you get w/ like Dell/Gateway/etc.

As for the Mac option, this is really pushing me in that direction and there are no where near the viruses out there cuz Apple OS is actually a good product; unlike windows. I think the Apple OS X is Unix based, right? This will be fun, if ever I run into problems and like on the PC platform jumping to DOS. I think the coolest command for DOS is still format C: I also call this the severe backhanded windows slap like the (well I will leave this to your imagination, but you can probably guess what I am thinking).

My windows 2000 server which hosts my website runs several months without booting. Just saying that windows is not all bad.

I was saying that xp is the worst yet. As weird as this sounds, I really haven't had many problems w/ 98se (or OSR2 if you will)

Why download the service pack from any place other than Microsoft? I have downloaded many fixes for XP over time from MickeySoft.

Never heard of MegaShaft...

Also if you want Service Pack free software, you'll need to buy a computer for use while sleeping. Software now is just too far complex to be 100 % positive before selling it that EVERYTHING is working. Given software complexity, and the market. It makes more money to sell buggy software with minor bugs that you can fix later on. If Bill waited for perfect sofware, we would likely be still using Windows 95 (which we would have gotten in 2000) and still waiting for XP...

I was downloading it for the xp machine on a 98se machine. The part that boggles me is why u can't do that. The patch is useless w/o the rest of the OS. I was referring mostly to the security bugs in this cheap shot and that isn't cool.

You can download full SP1 which does not need to be installed via net: get the SP1 network installation from http://www.microsoft.com …/updates/sp1/network.mspx (external link)

For me XP has always worked quite ok, just make sure your hardware is good quality parts with good drivers.

The USB2 is no problem, e.g. ASUS delivered the driver for USB2 and SATA with their http://www.asus.com …ta/a7n8x-e-d/overview.htm (external link)

I have downloaded every upgrade and service pack and all critical updates with no problems. My windows is rock solid except when a virus hit. I love windows. My first PC was a NCR with NCR Dos, no hard drive, then MS Dos, Then win 95 then win 98 then win Xp I would never to back. Every change had been positive for me. God bless Mr. Gates. He did what no one else even tried to do and made it work well. I just don't understand why every one hits on a man that built such a fab software system. He is RICH beyound anyone elses dreams but he did it himself and everyone else wants to rip him off and blame him for unfare competition. How can it be unfare. No one is forced to use his product. There is Linix, Mac,,, hahahahahaha. When they are at a competative price and run with as many programs as Windows does I may give one a try.........Nah... why leave a great system for a unknown..

Just my thoughts.

I stand corrected and agree with you on the "they should fix what thgey messed up" part. However, shouldn't you be going to the manufacturer to do the download? Good luck with it. I have never had any problems with my laptop and the xp that is one there.

The normal way the SP1 installation works is this: you download a small program, which is only a few hundred kilobytes. You start that program and it downloads the whole service pack (which is tens of megabytes) and then installs it.

Ofcourse that won't work if you download the SP on a Windows 98 machine. Pekka has already provided the link to download the entire service pack without immediately installing it.

Windows XP is the best version of Windows until now. It's MUCH more stable than Windows 95 or 98. The worst version was, IMO, Windows ME. I've never had Windows XP crash.
