Hey everyone,
I was in my usual camera store today, Rainer's Camera House in the city, and was served by a very unprofessional and rude man.
I asked to look at the Canon 40D, and immediately he gave me poor attitude and demanded, "have you looked at this before?", making me feel uncomfortable. I replied that I had indeed seen it before, and he followed up with "well, it's the same camera, nothing's changed", his tone implying that I didn't need to have a look at it.
As I held it up to look through the viewfinder, he challenged me, "what do you need to look at it for?" I have been considering to buy the 40D, and just wanted to try it out and look at the viewfinder compared to my 350D. However, I was shocked at his attitude and blunt questioning, and I didn't know what to say so I told him that I wanted to look through the viewfinder. He made another comment which made me feel bad, and with that, I handed him back the camera and stormed out. This all happened within 1 minute.
It wasn't like there were other customers queueing up and waiting and I was wasting his time and stopping him from serving others. The man was very unhelpful, and gave me poor attitude, and did not help his customer. I don't know if he thought I was toying with him and that I couldn't afford it - who is he to judge whether I can afford it or not? I'd like to let him know some people do work hard at their jobs and get paid well and can afford these hobbies. It's just a hobby, but this ordeal sure does leave a bad taste in the mouth.
I feel that when people are in a competitive market and trying to sell stock that is worth thousands of dollars, they should not belittle customers like that. I have bought my previous camera and lenses from them, and thanks to this forum's evil influence
, planned to buy a 40D or a 5D and goodness knows what L glass to go along with it from them within the next 10 days. Now I will not.
I normally shop there because of the great and helpful staff, and because I can see the cameras/lenses and try them out before I purchase it. This has never been a problem in the past. It is the one advantage that brick and mortar stores have over internet stores. I was happy to have the human interaction and support my local store. Now I may have to turn to the internet stores.
Without a doubt, if I were the boss, I would have terminated that employee on the spot. I can't have unprofessional people being rude to customers and turning them away from sales worth thousands of dollars to me; it's a business that I'm running and I need to sell the stock and facilitate return customers! Not only has he lost me as a customer, but also my camera hobby friends who I have directed there in the past.
So my fiancee and sister (who were with me in the store) went back to the store to complain to Michael (the manager) and he seemed to have known about, and expected, that particular employee's actions. I hope Michael sees that this one person has caused some problems. By the way, Michael is always friendly and helpful with any questions that I have. I must emphasise that it is just the one incompetent staff member, everyone else that I've dealt with is nice to chat to and helpful with my questions.
But shame on that one employee. I am a professional, and I take care of my patients, and from what I saw today, your actions were very unprofessional indeed. Poor form, mister.
