Hey guys, I'm in the market for a bargain-basement laptop and I'm looking for advice from anyone who's into that sort of thing.. I do desktops, not laptops :p

Looking for it to run Mozilla Firefox, Windows Media Player for DVDs, Itunes for music and Word. That's it. Not even all of them at once all of the time.

However... it can't run slow as a dog. I use a top end desktop (couple of years old now but it still runs real well) and I don't want something that's going to frustrate me.

I'm looking at:

Toshiba (it said A200 vo1 but when googling that it comes up with a much higher specced machine.. I'm guessing because this is an older model)
1.73ghz Pentium D processor
512mb ram (I can chuck more in from the computer fairs if it's too slow)
80gb hdd (eh, this will be way enough)
DVD +/- RW
15.4" screen

It's about $700. From what I can tell it sounds alright for what I want and after having a brief play in JB it seems to run quick enough for what I want - has anybody got any input?

Few points:

1. are you going to go wireless on battery, or always be plugged in.
2. what OS is on that machine?

either way it's a pretty good buy and you can't go wrong for $700.

I'm using the Photoshop plugin version on Vista x64 (with PS CS3) with no issues. It's version 2.1.3, though I see there's a newer one (2.2.0) on their website.

Haven't installed the standalone version (I bought both), so I don't know if it works.

Few things before I hit the sack.

Greg, 1) for me of all, although I can't put my finger on exactly why.

Jim, it may be worth salary packaging the laptop depending on your income and other bits - we did ours and it costs much less.

Feng, got 17-85, f stop is in, out and shaking it all about - and I love the IS on it. Took a couple hand held at 1/10, clear as anything. All lenses adjust f stop back and forth - you must have had a naff one.

Sam - nice DIF - pressure's off! Hope you enjoy tomorrow. Take ear plugs ;)
