My friends macs play up just as much as our pcs ever did... and my pc doesn't play up at all anymore once I spent a year or two ironing out all of the creases ;)

Not that I do anything particularly weird with my computer - I know people who have XP crash on them all the time.. hasn't ever done so to me once! I think not gaming and loading weird crap on helps a lot.

Interesting - I thought MACs were solid as.

As I've moved up from Win95 etc to Vista, it's become more stable. I had to re-install Win95 so frequently that I knew the registration numbers (about 25 words/letters combo) off by heart! XP was Ok, and Vista is fine. Still in the process of transferring stuff from the XP PC to the laptop, then the PC can go.

I'm using the Photoshop plugin version on Vista x64 (with PS CS3) with no issues. It's version 2.1.3, though I see there's a newer one (2.2.0) on their website.

Haven't installed the standalone version (I bought both), so I don't know if it works.

oh ok... i might go hunt down my old stuff and see if I can get it to work... ta for the heads up Mat. Just they didn't really note anything, and didn't want to really break anything.

Feng, got 17-85, f stop is in, out and shaking it all about - and I love the IS on it. Took a couple hand held at 1/10, clear as anything. All lenses adjust f stop back and forth - you must have had a naff one.

Yeah I had a play around with it yesterday when Helen came over... she was the same as me (swore it never used to do it)... but maybe we both were dreaming, and maybe it was cos when you're wide, and composing for f/4 using Manual, and suddenly zoom in on something.... and it changes... it may have been that which was rubbing me the wrong way :D

grats on the new lens... where's the duck and box shot? :D

Yeah - knowing how temperamental PC's tend to be (envy MAC users ) it would pay to be able to have some sort of recourse in the event of an issue. And price wise, probably not much diff between fairs and stores.

Mac's aren't that much more for entry level ones... the macbooks are pretty cheap for the small ones :)

Jim: Don't count on it lasting 3 hours if that's what they rate... my D620 is rated to 5-6 hours on the 6 cell battery, but yeah right... whatever :D hahahah once you have wifi going, screen a bit brighter than on level 1 out of 10... I think I get about 2-3 hours... That's running a C2D chip...

The Pentium D chips are known to use a bit more power and generate a bit more heat... so if you're looking for something with a bit more battery life, consider a Centrino based one (Centrino 'standard' will only be a single core ship (Pentium-M based)) and the Centrino Duo can be one of a couple... a Core Duo, or Core 2 Duo.

Hrm. Then I'm getting away from bargain-basement type laptops, which puts me off a bit... poor battery life is going to be a bugger, though. How much will a spare set you back?

spare set? :D it's not a camera mate :D hahahah it's one big lump of a battery... :D heheh

anyways... i think an extra battery is normally around 150ish?

With bargain basement...

I could get you this:

Toshiba Satellite Pro A120
Mobile Intel® Core Duo T2350 Processor, (1.86GHz, 533 FSB, 2MB L2 cache), Mobile-Intel® 945GM Express Chipset, 80GB (5400rpm) capacity SATA, 1GB DDR 667 expandable to 4GB (one slot used, one slot free), 15.4” WXGA Active Matrix CSV (1280x800 resolution), Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 945GM up to 128MB, DVD SuperMulti Dual / Double, One Type II PC card slot, RGB, 3 x USB 2.0, V.92 data + fax modem, GBit TX Ethernet, headphone & microphone port, SD slot, Intel® 3945 ABG PRO Wireless 802.11 a/b/g, 6 cell 4400mAh Lithium-Ion battery (up to 3.5 hrs), 1 year international parts and labour, Australia and New Zealand warranty includes complimentary courier pick-up and return service. Microsoft Windows Vista™ Home Premium.

It's $845.90 incl GST from the distro... I'd add 3% for handling... and it'll be shipped to you for free (courtesy of me ;))

Specs are a bit better yeah?

Oh... only problem is... availability is "Call" so they'd order it in I suspect.

Cheers. V happy with it - lens and hood for <$500, and great condition. Gotta love eBay!

Where's the what and what shot?

We'd be lucky to get 2 hours max, on the rare occasions it's off power. Generally just wandering around home with it. 17' screen, wifi etc drain it quick.

Got an external HDD which reads OK, and internal is a split 200gb. Just need to get my A into G and sort out backups again. Last desktop had 2 HDD's with ghost doing incrementals each day. Haven't got round to settign up new external.

mmm... I think Helen nearly fainted yesterday when I showed her my server :) hehee

I have my main PC (4x36G Raptors in RAID 10... 2x400G in RAID 1)

I have all my docs and photos (currently) on the 2x400 mirror. Everytime I upload more pics, I have a script which runs and mirrors this to the server (running 3TB of standard disk storage) and also off to a NAS (2x300 in RAID 1) which is on a different power circuit and different UPS.

Only thing remaining is to get my mini NAS up and running for offsite backup :)

got paranoid? :D

Very impressive, although paranoia hit me in early days (of reloading Win95 so frequently) - I did a full back up on 150 floppies before the days of burnable CD's !! Not so bad now.

In those days I was scared witless of getting a virus, and my (PITA) brother (who looked after the house one weekend when we were away) snuck a floppy in the slot, so when I booted up on return, it booted from floppy first, and looked like I had a virus! Took me 15 long and concerning minutes to figure out what had happened. He got a mate from work to write a basic script to replicate the BSOD and other "issues". I could have brained him.

i have about, 1250 bookmarks all up.

I just have about 20 categories (folders) and put them in the corresponding place. Somehave sub categories, like shopping, then online shopping within that.

I often use shortcut names (in properties, for example if I type in "TV" it jumps to the Brisbane TV guide. "willstar" leads to our homepage, etc.

This is with Firefox - don't use IE much.

Just do a cull beforehand - haven't used it in a year, prolly not gonna use it anyways. Gorne.

Just takes time, but worth the effort.
