Has it only been since we've had the increased rain? Send a PM to NerdyNigel he might have a few ideas.

I reckon it is dodgy scotch lock joint in one of the pits. The area you live in is the right vintage to have these. They are what joins the telephone cables in each of the pits. You just squeeze the thing with the cable in it and it joins the two together. Has a water proof grease in it to stop water shorting out the joint. After years and years this is not good and wet weather can start to break it down, once it start it just keeps going on and on.

What have Telstra said about it?

Thanks for the insight. We havnt got on to telstra about it, just trying to make sure it isnt a problem on our end. We will mention it next time they screw up something with the home phone and we have to call them to get that sorted out.

Mkay, with the talk about internet connections and such, i have a question. For a while now, we have been having problems with our connection. It was dying more than 10 times a day and the router needed to be reset each time. Then we were getting some horrible noises through the phone.

Dad thought that the router had died so he went and bought a new one. That didnt help at all. Now, when the phone rings or we make a call, the connection dies and the router needs to be kicked in the guts again. We have gone and bought new line filters in the hope that it was the old ones causing the problem, but no.

We are both pretty stumped at this and the dodgy connection is getting beyond annoying

Does the phone make stupid noises when the router's not connected? If so, it's definitely sounding like a dodgy line. Unplug all items, and just plug in one filtered phone, and see how it goes. If it still buzzes, line... if not, try turning the router on, and if it starts buzzing, i'd look at dodgy filtering.

The phone is clear as day when the router is turned off or disconnected, which is why we thought it was a filter or router problem. But new ones of both and different combinations didnt help at all.

A different phone didnt help either

It's possibly bad internal wiring in your house. Try unplugging all the things on the phone line (phones, faxes, etc) except the router and one phone (preferably a simple phone) and see if it still occurs. Move the phone to another point and try again if it does.

If possible, move the router to another point and test again.

and how about DSL stability when doing a line isolation test? (router only, no filters etc).

it could potentially be the splitter? or have you tried that?

I know for my router, it's crap when using in DSL2 mode as the filters were only designed for DSL1 (slightly different frequency afaik).

Guess only things you can do are:

1. Phone isolation (which you've proven your line into your house etc is fine).
2. DSL isolation (test DSL stability ruling out filters, etc).

If that works, you have to focus on your filters making sure you get DSL2 certified ones... C10 (rebadged as jackson) are good, but I found they made no diff for my router (billion). I have a central filter which I'm procrastinating installing... that should fix it ;)

Horrendous photo I know, but it is the subject matter that is important!:D:D

Hopefully it wasn't the new lens used to take the photo

Yes, although the bag wouldn't close that well if the camera was attached to it. I just dragged it out to try and it would work best down either side. Gripped camera and 24-105 attached could go in the middle slot and kit or small prime in other side. With the camera in the middle closing it will be a bit tighter than normal but should work Velcro doesn't meet easily but the clip does up.

hmmmm...I might have to pop into Crumpler in the city and pick one up. Cheers for the info :)
