Do they just bump into things and do this?

Wow!.. yeah, pretty much, i think they do..

mind sharing your specs on this one?... I'm guessing extension tubes with this kind of detail...

Thanks for the comments much appreciated.

It was shot with Canons MP-E 65 1x 5x life size. Flash was the main light source (diffused).

ISO400, F13, 1/250 shot in Manual Mode on my 30D.

Lovely shot- yes guess they do bump into things - worst one I saw was a hoverfly with a tear (as in torn) on one eye.

Excellent shot -- any chance it is a halo effect from the flash?

i wonder how a dent like that would effect its vision

i cant wait till i get my mp e-65 but to put it to good use i need to shell out for a decent flash oh well the life of a macro addict

I can't see what they could fly into to do this. It's a definite crease, and I'd expect a collision with glass to leave a flat mark...
