I'm off to the Philippines in a month for an extended trip and am planning on bringing along my Vagabond. I was going to pack it in my pelican case but was wondering if anyone has had any experience/problems with bringing portable power like the vagabond on flights. I gave up on calling the airline to ask as I couldn't get a straight answer.

Thanks for the link, very informative. Kind of sucks but I don't think I am going to chance it. Guess I will go the strobist route for this trip.

Make sure your insurance is up to date. I used to live in Manila and carrying your gear around is like wearing a bulls-eye. Make sure that you only venture where the locals will go.

I carry travel insurance, with coverage for my photo equipment when I travel. Costs about USD$200 (not cheap) but I'm covered for $5,500 worth of equipment, as well as hospital evacuation insurance etc. Yeah, you have to be careful when you go overseas and use some common sense. Been to the Philippines many times with no problems (knock wood). Lots of photo opportunities and I love to get out of Manila.

I take out a travel policy that covers me the whole time I am away. This is generally for 30-days. What I like is it will pay for evacuation if you get really ill, covers things for cancelled flights, and a whole bunch of other things. My equipment is also covered if stolen etc. which is great. What I do is provide a complete list to my insurance person with serial numbers etc.. They cover replacement cost which is great. Makes me more comfortable as there are times you need to leave things in your room (I normally find a room with a room safe and put as much of my gear I'm not bringing in there). Some of you may be covered under your existing policies for your home, but I am not so this is great.
