I just got a new 580 EX (and I love it)!!! But I was wondering... Do you always have to do everything in manual mode because when the flash is on, it doesn't take that into consideration if you are in any of the auto modes. Even when in manual it is saying everything is going to be way under exposed... Is this normal?

Not sure I follow. Are you talking manual mode on the flash or the camera?

Please provide your camera settings (i.e. manual, Av, program, or Tv) and the flash settings (i.e. ETTLII, auto, or manual) so we can give you a better answer.

You can use the flash in any mode you wish. Just remember the camera meter is going to only meter the ambient light. If you are lighting your subject primarily with flash, your camera meter is going to show the ambient light as being underexposed.
