Thought I would try a smoke shot. I then dragged it into photoshop and added a blue gradient background and then made that grad layer a Hard Light layer.

The shot was taken on a 350D with a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (I sold my macro a few weeks ago! doh!). ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 80th of a second at 200mm.

The smoke was provided by a incense stick and the background is a black towel. The smoke was lit (due to lack of a off camera flash cord) by two halogen desk lamps placed directly below the smoke.

The lights and stick were on a table below the work surface where the towel was so it gave me a completely clean background to shoot against and also so the lights didnt illuminate the towel or work surface.

I then ran the image through Noiseware to remove some of the noise caused by the high iso. The image was rotated 90 degrees CW as well.

I like it! nice effect...although i think the white at the right bottom corner is grabbing my attention way too much! The gradient should be lightest blue at the bottom not white...my 2 cents.

I agree that the white is overpowering. How about black>blue?

I thought the white end of the gradient didnt look too bad as there wasnt much smoke in that corner anyway but ill have a play around and try and get something a bit better. Thanks for the comments.

really like the smoke....especially the curl.

agree that the white is distracting....my eye keeps going to it instead of the smoke.

the original image had too much of an overpowering white, and the lst edit, perhaps needs a little more white...
and - it 'almost' has the look of a film (blue) noir shot.
jean harlowe just off camera sort of thing, Humphrey bogart blows the smoke.
anyway - just me perhaps :)
