I can confirm that 40D + taped Kenko Pro DG300 x1.4 + Canon 100-400 (Using centre point AF, one shot and AI Servo)

Does NOT work

This really sux as it worked fine on the 30D and the 40D is supposed to have improved AF sensitivity/accuracy.

It feels like the upgrade from 30D to 40D was less of an upgrade than it seemed.
With lower light sensitivity and now this.

Improved AF yes, within specification. You're operating AF out of spec where performance is not characterized or guaranteed. That it worked with the 30D was a bonus and perhaps the tolerances have changed in the 40D?
I too would love to see this combo work (I have this exact same setup), but, oh well. Remember that taped or not taped, the AF system is still operating at f/8.

Good news though, is that there are lots of 30D's floating around...

Pity it don't work properly - I have tried it - Canon 1.4x and 100-400 with taped contacts - it is sluggish and requires several shots to lock and likes a lot of light - However; zooming the 100-400 to the 300mm makes it work a lot better - although this offers no real advantage in lens reach.

I have the feeling that my 30D works better under the same conditions.

All I can say is ----- Bugger!!!

I wonder if there is an hidden camera function somewhere that will help the focus situation. I will have a desparate flick through the manual later.

Anyone know what cfn 3:1 Lens Drive When AF Impossibe does.

Is this the sort of problem that an update from Canon could cure?

That determines if the camera will hunt for focus or just stop if it can't lock straight away.

On the bright side, without a TC you still get more pixels on your subject than you did with the 30D. It will give you a little more cropping margin.

I sold my canon 1.4x not too long ago since the Kenko one worked better on my 5D and 30D.

Too bad about the 40D. I was looking forward to using it. Oh well. No sense in repurchasing the Canon TC.

I guess I should be happy with 640mm FOV Equil...:D

Brad - thanks for helping me look on the bright side - Every cloud has its silver lining - or so some would lead us to believe.
I especially bought the 40D because I thought the extra pixel count combined with the extra reach of the 1.4x convertor would be an advantage - oh well; can't win 'em all I suppose - but it would nice to win a few. However, it does seem to work a bit although unpredictably - will try it again later.

Ray - you can always use the tc and manual focus for peching/still birds.

No, just no updated signature as yet - it doesn't mention my Kenko and Canon TCs either, but they exist too....

;)
