If the 400/5.6L doesn't qualify as a "decent" lens.......

My thoughts exactly...

Am interested too because I think my next lens will be the 100-400L and as I have the 40D it will be worth knowing what tc's work the best if at all.

Does anyone have shots of the 100-400 at 400 and then same with the 1.4 or 2 tc to compare?

is it just 400 F5-6 that does not work with the TC? for using AF (no tape)

EF500mm f4.0 L IS USM would that work with TC and AF?

EF500mm f4.0 L IS USM would that work with TC and AF?

f4 + 1.4tc = f5.6 so would work on any Canon DSLR.
Any f5.6 lens (100-400 or 400mm prime) would be f8 with a 1.4 tc therefore would only AF on 1 series body.

Do you mean you'll be returning the camera if it doesn't work well with a TC on the 100-400?

In other words, returning it because it is working to specification?

Hmmm....

Addendum:
Well I don't know which setting I altered to cock up the buffer performance but I was only seeing 6 buffer shots remaining at any quality setting. I've cleared all camera and custom settings and now the buffer seems to be up to 16 for raw files, 20 for sraw and 99+ for small jpeg. I admit I made tweaks without recourse to the manual but even so I can't imagine why I was down to a buffer size of just 6 photos. Most odd

Noise reduction. See this thread:

No. I will be returning it because if it works less well than the 30D it will not be a worthwhile upgrade.

In which case you're returning it for working the way it is designed to.

It doesn't matter that the 30D happened to work well with a TC on the 100-400, it was never intended to, and we have no right to expect the 40D to continue that trend, no matter how much we'd like it to.

I'll bet that if you're honest with the shop about why you're returning it, they refuse to take it back.

I know I would.

Here is a sequence of 11 handheld shots at approx 1 second intervals of a seagull in flight (not simply hovering) taken with a 40D, EF 100-400 and Kenko 1.4X teleconverter. Only the centre AF point was used. The shots were taken in raw and converted to jpeg in Lightroom with no editing whatsoever.

The website will automatically resize the photos to fit your screen but you can download the full 10MP images from the website for closer scrutiny if you wish.

p.s. the lens was at 400mm.

Sorry the site is performing poorly. It is the Google Picasaweb website so I would expect it to work pretty well. I know of no restrictions on bandwidth so please try again. The link/site worked fine for me when I tried just now.
