Got em,

the focus is bang on! Did you tape the contacts?

Yes. They were already taped from previous use on my 30D. On the 30D AF would not attempt to operate with the 100-400 lens. I doubt very much that removing the tape would work on the 40D either since I imagine the camera software would see the f/8 equivalent aperture and simply shut down the AF, regardless of whether or not it would work.

I wouldn't say the focus is bang on for all of them - two or three shots are a bit suspect, but once it was locked in it held focus well.

More tracking shots, this time of a car doing ~30mph here....

Once again the lens was at 400mm. The shots were taken in sraw and processed in DPP with Picture Style = Standard and Sharpness = 5.

For a combination of body/lens/teleconverter that is not supposed to work I think the results are very good overall.

I've now shot a short video to demonstrate the AF performance of my 40D, Canon 100-400 @ 400mm and Kenko 1.4X teleconverter. Unfortunately my camcorder was playing up so I lost the start of the footage and my video editor is playing up so I could not trim off a bit of old wedding footage from the end of the tape but all the important points are covered. This was shot about an hour before sundown so the light was not stellar and I ran out of time to reshoot a clean video.

I just had a chance to play around with my 40D + Kenko 1.4 + 100-400L around my house.

As mentioned previously in this thread, it looks like AF on the center point is hit or miss...unless I have really good contrast, it hunts endlessly.

However I get better results using AF points other than the center. I guess this is the "extra sensitivity" everyone is talking about with the center AF point?

Anyways, plan to take everything to my local zoo for further testing. Will report back the results.
