Why I'm stuck on FF

I didn't want to hi-jack another thread, so I'm starting another thread in response to this thread:
https://photography-on-the.net …php?do=newreply&p=3961217

This is why I love FF. Sure, I love my 5D, but it could do with some of the upgrades on the newer bodies. It's funny, but if it's not FF, it's not going to be my main body (for now anyways).

- Resolution: I know people will argue that you don't need the resolution, but if it's "free" and it doesn't increase noise, I want it. I can always buy more hard drives and a faster computer, so I don't see any drawbacks to it. higher resolution means the ability to crop more and to pixel peep. I view a lot of my pics on my computer and sometimes, I like to view at 100% to see details of the shots I take.
- Viewfinder. I've played with the 1D Mark III a bit, so can't comment on it too much, but IMO, I still love the huge viewfinder on the 5D.
- 5D weight and size. It's lighter than the 1D series. It usually doesn't matter, but when it does, it really does.
- Lenses. I love my 24-105mm lens. I more frequently have wished it was wider than the number of times I have wished it was longer. Moving to a crop body would mean I would have to carry an UWA like the 16-35mm. There are many times when I like to have my camera with me in a really small bag. While I love the fact that you have lens selection on SLRs, it's not a selling feature for me. If there was a lens that was light, fast, had IQ comparable to primes and had a range from 14mm to 300mm, I'd be first in line. Unfortunately, that lens doesn't exist, so until Cannon makes a 14mm-105mm or like, a FF body is going to be my main body.
- Sports and action. I like shooting it, but it's not my main thing.

I played with a 1D Mark III for about an hour this week and still prefer my 5D. Now if I could get a 1Ds Mark III for $5000, I'd be in heaven (and could probably live with the weight). I love doing landscapes so resolution is important to me. I've got huge monitors set up that I can spread out a large image on. Call me a geek, but I love looking at landscapes spread across two monitors and I frequently look at my images at 100%.

Hmm...that's all I can think of for now.

Some good points you have there. One man's opinion...

I certainly agree having a lighter body would be nice sometimes, but I love my Mark III.

Dude, you seriously need that 16-35 ANYWAY!! It will be outrageously wide on your 5D, just like 10-22 is on a crop camera. Except that the 16-35/17-40 have better image quality. Much as the 10-22 is touted as a 'hidden L', it isn't really an L. It's good, but it's not FANTASTIC. Tell me about it, I'm on my second copy of the 10-22 and I love my 17-40 to death too. Oh yeah, if you don't want the added weight and/or need the aperture of the 16-35, 17-40 is superb, too.

Landscape ain't landscape without ultrawide!! :D

Agreed with you on all the points above. It sounds like you are waiting for the 5DMk2, which isn't a bad thing: It will probably do all of that in the 5D sized body.

Given that the 5DMk2 must have a superset of the 40D's features due to product positioning, we can infer that most if not all of the 40D's improvements will migrate up to the Mk2. Being a 5D, it will retain FF and most likely the body size with optional BG-E4N weatherized* grip and perhaps WFT-E4A wireless transmitter. Actually I am hoping they keep the WFT-E3A so I can share between my 40D and future 5DM2. Things like Live View, picture style editor, dust cleaning, are all likely to appear - they have with very regular consistency in other Canon DSLRs.

(* I won't speculate on the degree of weather sealing. This one could go either way.)

I'm forecasting the finder will inherit the new improvements including better optics as the 40D received. It will look GREAT :)

It will probably receive an MP bump since everything else does, maybe 16MP. I hope they keep the same stellar ISO performance or even improve it.

I agree that the 5D is an awesome camera. If you don't shoot sports that often, than the 3 fps will suffice. I have FF and speed now so it's a perfect combo for me. These 2 bodies fit my needs atm. If a 5D MK II is released with more bells and whistles, I will surely jump on it. This is why Canon makes different bodies for different needs. The MK III is nice but, if it won't fit what you shoot, than you certainly don't need it.

I agree with everything above. I think my 5D was excellent value for the money and saw a definite improvement in image quality over my 20D (which already impressed me). Although I like the wider FOV of full frame, the lower noise is what sold me.

I loved the 5D, but am very happy with the 1D. Remember, the 1D is a 1.3 crop, where as the 40D is a 1.6. To me, that's a big difference.

Here's to saving up for the 1Ds!

Yah, I know I "need" the 16-35mm. :) I just have to wait till I go to the states again because the prices in Canada are so high. I love wide angle photography so I'm even thinking of getting the new 14mm L.

I just wish the replacement 5D would be available now because I really want a second body. That would work out perfectly for me. As it stands, my plans are foiled so it looks like I'll have to get either the 40D or the Mark III as my back up body and then the 5D Mk II when it comes out. It sure is going to be an expensive 12 months.

I'm in agreement about the weather sealing - I think it could go either way too. As for resolution, my guess is it will be about 16MP too. I was doing some Photoshop work last night and really did appreciate having the high resolution to play with (ability to crop, etc).

I totally agree that the 1.3 vs. 1.6 is a huge difference. That's the main reason I would even consider paying over USD3K more for a 1D Mark III over a 40D. The weather sealing, higher framerate, etc is nice, but the biggest "advantage" or difference for me and my kind of shooting, is the smaller amount of crop on the Mark III.

Nice! Glad you love your 5D. I'd be thoroughly saddened if you didn't love it! It is a great camera.

I am hoping to get a hold of a really good "OLD school film camera" soon. I actually do mean something from manual focus days just to see what I can learn from them.

Very true. I shot with two Minolta Maxxum 9000s for about 10 years so I was very use to a 28-85mm (I'll have to double check the numbers) lens. The 24-105 was great because it was wider and longer than what I was used to.
