Ah yes. The good old 20D->30D->5D + 40D morphing trick. Certainly worked wonders for me.

There you go...lesson #2...The Morphing Camera Trick.

Lesson #3: The Morphing Lens Trick.
Turn the 17-55 to a 24-105, and a 70-200 f4IS to a 70-200 f2.8 IS to a 100-400L. The drawback here would be that because the 100-400 has the push/pull zoom, it would be hard for the significant other to not notice that. But in the end, it's all worth it.

Well a couple of suggestions. Someone should make some 20D (or better yet, 10D) stickers that are to scale. This way you could disguise your new purchase very easily.

When the need for flash comes up, you can always claim that the internal flash on your new 5D is broken, so you want to save money and just get an external flash, rather than sending it in to be repaired. Or you could truthfully tell her that it would be impossible to fix the internal flash so it would fire again, and therefore you'd have to buy a whole new camera to get internal flash back... cheaper to get a 580EX.

For the lenses, you could always try to go with the story that the lens always had push pull capability, but you hadn't figure out how to use it until just recently. This is where more of those disguise stickers would come in handy.

I think it would also be helpful to get a black sharpy and cover all those red lines up... or use black electrical tape.

I have found the best way to get my wife to support photography is to involve her in many aspects of it such as on photos shoots as an assistant, a model for lighting tests, get her a camera and show her how you can make it dance with great pictures, take great pictures of the family at special events, decorate the house with your framed photos, etc....

Now days, I don't hear nothin' about a purchase.

The following is from an actual documented case of the Morphing Lens Trick. Names have been omitted to protect the innocent (don't take the meaning of the word "innocent" too literally):

She: What is that big black plastic round thing on the front of the lens?

Me: It's called a lens hood and it is used to shade the lens from sunlight which could cause glare.

She: It sure does make the lens look a lot bigger.

Tell her to get back in the Kitchen! (waits for angry female response)

hah hah hah.. not angry ( laughs at you though)

just tell her that you wanted better gear to take pictures of her with.( tell her how beautiful she is, and if that doesnt work... i dont know what to say to you.

my husband just bought a 2000 dollar tool chest, and about 8 grand worth of tools. he even cut into the cash i was saving up for a 5D ( i was halfway there)

but he made it all better with this ( i bought this tool chest and tools, so i could be a more well rounded, better organized mechanic, so i could do my job more efficiently. that way you have more money to buy your camera stuff with;) ) that worked on me.

then again i dont think that most women are easy to please like i am. lol.

but if you guys arent sharing finances with each other yet, and you dont make financial decisions together yet. then i dont see what the big problem is.

shannon

EDIT- but i will say that while we were dating he bought a new truck. quad cab 4 wheel drive. ( the whole package) he later said that it was big enough to fit the kid into, and more to come.( but you know men. they want the biggest and baddest toy out there) but i drive that truck now, so im not angry anymore. :)

He gave you his truck? Hang on to that fellow! I'll do a lot for my wife, but she's not getting my truck. :)

lol.. he gave it to me because it got to the point when everytime he drove it it would break. we were going to go off roading. and he was checking the lugs, and all of that stuff.. noticed one was loose.. started tightening it, and the wheel stud broke off. lol.. i think she hates him. so he gave me the truck.. ive been driving it for two years now, and havent had a single problem with it.. other than the fact it guzzles gas like its going out of style.

lol, the part that bothered is she went shopping friday for a wedding gift for my cousin. found out she bought some stuff for, i didnt care. saturday i bought her a pair of nice diamond earings. But im not allowed to buy something? (insert rolley eyes)

see, you're starting to get it. that is exactly correct ...don't even try to figure it all out. the sooner you realize this, the happier you'll be. that said, 15 years of marriage has also taught me that there's times that it's just worth taking the heat (the 40D purchase, CLEARLY one of those times).

nice purchase, congrats and don't sweat the fiancee thing, she'll get it over it.....eventually.

The morphing lens option is good, but not available when you want to go from the regular black lenses to the white L lenses (Damn you Canon! Make a black 70-200 already!) My kit lens is about to morph into a Tamron 28-75. The lens hood is the perfect disguise as I can tell her I just bought the hood for 20 bucks to protect my kit lens.
"Honest honey, that hood is why it looks different to you"

Also, have kids ASAP! For 20 bucks, you can buy a kit by Epson to make a little photobook for her of her new little angel (or you can go to shutterfly or other sites and do it on-line) I did this last Mother's Day and made some cute little captions and she still carries the thing around everywhere. I think if I had asked her for a Hasselblad right after handing her the book she would have driven me to the store!

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)

Boy was she not happy, wouldn't talk to me the rest of hte night. So know i gotta be a good boy and try and make things good again.

PMSL you need to dump this dumb ass chick and get a woman that understands that your money is your own. I'd not do anything and let her sulk, her own stupid fault.

The Force is strong in this one...

You know, I'm pretty sure my wife knows what's going on. She lets me have my fun with my "geeky" gear, as she would put it. But she's made comments here and there that makes me thinks she knows my gear have grown. I think if she found out how much it has grown, she would become my Ex-Wife.
