Sell 40D and 17-55mm IS to fund 5D and 24-105mm?

I'd have to sell a 60mm macro EF-S too...

I'm just thinking that the IQ of 5D is better, as is the depth of field control, and I like 24-105mm on FF. But it is pretty expensive...

The 40D is SO much better than the XTi I'm replacing, but it just seem like everything that comes out of a 5 looks amazing, more so than the 40...

Any thoughts?

Yeah I agree. I am waiting for the day I can get my paws on that combo, but for now I have to settle with a 30D.

Coming from film I am still missing that extra that FF gives you, especially the thin DOF.

Advantages of the trade: You get a 5D and the best all round lens canon makes! You loose, f2.8. But you can get primes that actually act like they are designed too now!

You will also get superior noise control at the higher ISO's with the 5D... I'm in a similiar boat looking to upgrade... I got ahold of a 40D and have used a 5D lots of times and the choice was obvious for me: the 5D

i wouldn't jump on a 5D just yet, it must be due for a replacement shortly i would say.
I upgraded from the 400D to the 40D but have my heart set on a full frame body, but figured the 5D has been around for a little while now so could be up for a new model, or i could be totaly wrong.

However, what i am doing is building up my lens collection for when i do go full frame.
Have gotten a 24-70L 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 IS and now looking at the 16-35 2.8
once i have that, then i will look into a few primes, then save for that full frame body

You may want to read this article on Luminous Landscape (external link)

Scroll down to the conclusions regarding the 40D/5D comparisons.

I made the switch, got rid of all my gear but one crop body lens. I do NOT regret it at all :).

Have you thought about reversing the question and asking what the 40D isn't doing that you really want it to? Are you missing certain shots because of a limitation on the 40D that the 5D will address?

I'm pointing this out because, from what I've seen, the 40D's IQ is superb, and the early indicators are that it's an otherwise excellent camera. I'm also huge supporter of the 5D and I think it's the best camera that Canon makes on a dollar for dollar basis. However, because the difference in price is roughly 300% for the total package, I don't see a whole lot of cost-benefit. 90% of pictures that can be taken with a 5D can also be taken with a 40D at similar quality.

So...were I in your position and willing to pay the difference in price to upgrade kits, use that money to first get the 24-105 4L IS or the 24-70 2.8L and shoot with that on your 40D. If that reveals a real failing of the 40D body, then get a 5D. Generally, the wisdom on POTN goes like this: unless you really need godzilla sized prints, get glass first, then get a body.

why not wait for the 5D MarkII? it won't be any more expensive, yet it will be soooo much better, at least as good as the D3, with better IQ.

look how much better Canon has made the XTi sensor to be, now image that done to a 5D, not to mention all other cool features

i also used to shoot film SLR, but i actually like the 1.6 crop factor, so i'm not considering upgrade to 5D before i get paid a lot to shoot weddings and stuff ;)

i didnt even waste my time with the 40D because i want the 5D like its going out of style. ill keep my xti as a second body.. but... im not even going to waste what i have saved up now on a 40D i know that some people are fine and happy with their 40D but the 5D will give me more control, better IQ, and great for the kind of stuff that i like to shoot.

dont struggle with the thought too much. its worth it.

If you aren't using the Macro, and you don't need some of the features of the 40D (like 6.5fps) then I would go for the 5D.

I find myself always grabbing the 5D. My 40D, like the 30D it replaced, is still my backup camera.

Pics just look better/cleaner from the 5D above ISO800.

Sure I can get the 40D to look great using higher ISO by shooting to the right, etc...but I feel the margin for recovery is better on the 5D for sure.

Plus, my lens lineup is for FF. So my 40D will probably only get used when I want to go long.
