What kind of card reader do you use? Can you recommend one?

USB sandisk well built reads all sorts of cards etc, if you need speed get the fire wire one, but like 3 times the price (check you have fire wire on the computer first)

Are you sure the images are not downloading but you are not seeing the status bar.

I connect my camera/card reader and the canon window pops up, I hit download then leave it, nothing happens for about 5 mins then suddenly zoombrowser opens up and all the pictres are there, I hardly ever get a status bar appearing, it seems to be a minor glitch.

Do you have lightroom? You can download using that at well sometimes.

Apart from that, get yourself a card reader, I use mine with the canon transfer software and it is a lot quicker and still puts them in the right place.

Make sure you get a USB-2 card reader and not an old USB-1 version. The -2 type is MUCH faster.

must be quite an old PC not to have a card reader slot built in, good luck anyway.

Thank you to EVERYONE who has replied offering help and suggestions! It is MUCH appreciated!

I just returned with my new card reader and I'm wondering why I never got one sooner! This is 100 times better than just plugging the camera into the computer!

In conclusion, I really think my problem has something to do with the camera, not with the computer. I tried to DL the pics on two different computers with no luck. I plan to contact Canon about this later on.

Thanks again!

Are you sure you haven't accidentally changed the Communication setting in the camera menu from Normal to PTP or vice versa?

Anything is possible... do you know how I can go in and check this out?

Thanks for your help!

Could be lead, or socket on the camera, if you used to connect the camera a lot, I think card reader is the best way overall, just be careful plugging it into the reader and make sure you disconnect it via the eject drive in windows every time you remove it,, (cannot remember this process no more on a PC, I use a Mac, but it is better in case the card is being read or written to)

Make sure you get a USB 2.0 reader, and not one of the older ones... HUGE difference in the transfer speeds.

I might have missed it (apologies if I did), but I didn't see anyone suggest taking the main and back-up batteries out of the camera briefly to thoroughly reset it. It could be that the firmware has got itself into a weird state.

Personally I only ever put the CF in the card reader, never connect the camera to puter, never had any problems either

This is what I generally do also. I recommend formatting the CF card in the camera, not on the PC, each time before using it again though as I've had similar issues to the OP when taking pics and trying to download them via the card reader. The PC wouldn't recognize any files on the CF card, but if I put it back in the Camera it showed the files were there. That was the one time that I can remember hooking the camera (30D) up to the PC and transferring the images via cable. Seems like my problem was just 180 degrees in the other direction of what was happening here.

Lots of PC don't have one. Most mid range and lower end package deals do though. A lot of multi card readers don't read CF cards either.

Thanks for your help!

It's a menu setting on the camera.

Good point and well worth trying.
